I started on this one before “Glory” but had to set it down and take a step back. I wasn’t willing to abandon these pups, though. Auggie and Anna Bella are part of a rescued litter, most of the siblings of which are now participating in a one of a kind puppy training program in Texas in which they receive one year’s training tailored to each specific phase of puppyhood. Monet's Labrador

Artist Vanda Lavar, has painted Sweet Loretta, a lovely Yellow Labrador frolicking happily in a coastal recreation of "Monet's Garden," one can note the Santa Cruz mountains in the background. The artist also chose to include blossoms of the local variety of For-get-me-not wild flowers. Ms. Lavar's works are collected internationally and can be found gracing products worldwide in such stores as Target and also upon the puzzles produced by Schmidt toy company.

January Desktop Calendar ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

This year I'm gifting monthly desktop calendars built from some of my favorite Painting a Dog a Day pieces. Ideally I'll send them out on the last Monday of the previous month, so watch for more timely updates!

To implement, simply download the file directly from my website. I've set up a couple different ways to do this, either via the photo album or a direct link.

I am by no means an expert on the variety of operating systems, so I highly recommend that if you don't know how to change your desktop wallpaper, you don't just email me with your questions. Please consult your computer's help files - they will be more concise, more knowledgeable and more responsive than lil' ole' me.

However I fully expect there to be some sort of hiccough or two as I sort out the best means to get the Desktop Calendars implemented (meaning I've gotta figure out the most optimal file size and all that other good stuff!), so I appreciate your patience with me!! Andre is sized to fit a standard screen height of 768 - I realize there are lots of variables that could impact how this file displays on your screen, though. Please let me know if, once you get the file installed, there are display quality issues (keep in mind, too, that options such as "stretching to fit," "tiling" and "cropping" will impact your display, so check those first!).

Meanwhile, Andre says enjoy!!!

For the New Year I wanted to do an affordable painting a day all at the same price. They are painted

quickly and with love since they all represent my life. This particular piece is of my two youngest Labs. Sammy, black is 6 and Ozzie, chocolate is 4 months.

I will say at times I may paint something other than a Lab. I may. haha. I send it first to the people who are on my newsletter list and since they are all Lab people, well I guess that answers the big question of what will I paint tomorrow.

This piece is done in using Golden Open Acrylics on an 8" x 6" RayMar acid free Canvas panel.

Snow Much Fun ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

Here is another painting I've prepared specifically for this year's Art Show at the Dog Show. This one I did during the holiday break - it's a big portrait, and took me several days to complete.

You may recall the far left pose as one I painted before - at the time I was unhappy with certain elements and wanted to give it another shot (the background is certainly lovely, but poor Nita has no neck and shoulders as painted, and it's painful to look at!).

Originally I sketched Snow Much Fun with a different airborn pose on the far left. It didn't take me long to figure out that I needed the more inviting "come on and play" Nita to make the piece even more irresistable.

Any who, the tunes were cranked (I'm digging on the new Florence + the Machine release) and the paint was flying (just like the snow) while I worked on this piece.

My favorite bits are the super loose brushwork - many of the marks look like doodles. And the joy apparent in Nita's face led to some joyful color selections as well (I am in love with that turquiose blue-green that I sketched her with!).

There's PLENTY of views of this painting in process on the studio Facebook page - just visit the "Mobile Uploads" folder and step back a few days, since I worked on it at the tail end of last week and over the weekend.

I need to also thank Nita's mom for sending the most extraordinarily yummy photos ever. It's no surprise that stellar paintings start with stellar references. Perhaps I should dedicate a sidebar one day next week to taking good reference photos.....

Now what to paint next? I have one, maybe two, more Art Show at the Dog Show slots to fill..... You have the weekend to shower me with suggestions!!

I chose an ambitious composition for my next piece, a larger painting created specifically for The Art Show at the Dog Show, an annual juried exhibition in Kansas that focuses exclusively on canine artwork.

It's always fun to work up more complex concepts than a traditional portrait approach would not necessarily embrace. And after the holidays, when I've done primarily portraits for the prior 3 months, it's especially fun to lose myself in a storytelling piece.

As with most of my work, you can see multiple views of this painting (above is just a detail) on the studio Facebook page.

I regularly get emails asking about my processes and it often takes me days to respond personally - you are welcome to comment on the FB images if you have particular questions, and then I can answer them more quickly and in a public forum where they could potentially help/answer anothers' concerns.

Doberman Painting by Dawn Secord

This painting is 17" x 27" and features Kayla - a new champion. Kayla's owners have each of their Doberman's painting when the dogs finish their American Kennel Club (AKC) Championship. As a fun addition to the painting, an AKC ribbon is placed in the painting along with the dog.

I had met Kayla's owners at a dog show where she was not present. Traveling to Northern California allowed me to meet up with the owners and Kayla and be able to photograph Kayla in person. She was an awesome model and I obtained some wonderful reference material from our photo shoot.

The ribbon is a ribbon one of my dogs had won. So, I had a real life ribbon to paint from - an added plus.

I had a great surprise when I got an email that I sold my first picture on Etsy! This little guy is headed to a new home in Virginia. I had gone to a local gallery about six months ago to show my work in hopes of him representing me in the gallery. He really liked my work, but didn't think it was something that would really sell well in his gallery. He suggested trying some online sites such as Etsy. So, I thought I would try it, it also eliminates the large percentage the galleries take and puts me in control of my sales. Close to our Hearts

I just completed this watercolor of "Nelson" and delivered it to the owners on Saturday. They were so pleased with the painting and miss the dog they had for what seemed a short time. I saw Nelson for the photographs, and within a month he had to be put to sleep due to cancer. They knew he wasn't well, but none of us knew he must have been in pain that day. He seemed full of energy, but at times would wander off by himself. I have since become friends with the owners, as I often do when I paint a subject so close to their hearts. www.gaildolphinart.com

"Caddie," 10" square, commissioned Westie portrait, done in acrylics on a panel. I am so very grateful for my newest collector and the opportunity to work lifesize! (For those of you who don't know, prior to starting the relatively small daily paintings, I specialized in larger than life pet portraits.)

Painting Caddie was a blast - I worked on her over the course of two days. I photographed the progression, which you can see and comment on via the studio's Facebook page. There's something to be said for working with larger brushes and gestures - it makes for more dancing at the easel, and a lot of smiles along the way.

While working, I listened to a fascinating interview withartist Robert Genn, the voice behind the highly popular Twice Weekly Letters and quite a seasoned and generous talent himself. I highly recommend that other artists take the time to listen to his sage advice. He discussed everything from the value of workshops to creating your own style to finding exposure in the market. I was fascinated by the breadth of his knowledge and his willingness and ability to share it so frankly - which I suppose is why his letters/blog are so eagerly read and commented on.

Underpaintings

In my studio, underpaintings serve a couple of purposes:

They immediately kill any fear of working with a blank surface (yes, I get intimidated by a clean panel and a challenging idea)
They provide a value other than bright white for comparing colors/brushwork (it's way easier to judge whether I've got the right value mixed when I'm using a middle value as opposed to one of the two extremes)
They are an excuse to kick the saturation up. Way, way up.

Although the first two are probably the most important, the third reason is my favorite.

Because I like to layer loose and messy brushwork, and when I do this, I get great "peek-a-boo-pockets" inbetween. And when I have a boldly colored underpainting, those pockets reveal surprise touches of color that delight the eye.

Just like Lucy.

Miniature Portraits / Christmas Ornaments

I've started making some miniature portraits! They have been so much fun to make and I'm really happy with how they've been turning out. They're 3"x3" and are created with a mixture of acrylic paint and colored pencils. I use a technique with heating the colored pencil so the wax can be manipulated like paint. I'm so proud of them!

My newest that I just finished yesterday, I just love Boston Terriers!

They are $20 and come with a nice decorative box perfect for storage. A miniature display easel can also be purchased to display the art year round.

"Perseverance" by Beth Lowell

According to Dictionary.com, the word perseverance means: “steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.”

In a theological sense, it means “continuance in a state of grace to the end, leading to eternal salvation.”

I’m not sure about eternal salvation here, but this word definitely describes Koh-Koh’s steadfastness in the face of adversity. Attacked by neighborhood dogs, he came to the Misha May Foundation after sustaining serious injury that required some pretty extensive and reconstructive surgery. He never once complained.

Misha May’s volunteer foster family also deserves kudos for their preseverance in caring for him for just about a year until Koh-Koh found his forever home.

I chose this dog as my muse for my final entry to the Canine Art Guild’s annual Helping Paws exhibition because of his courage and as a tribute to the Misha May Foundation’s dedication and hard work in helping him recover. (Besides, who can resist a cone-wearing dog?)

It took some perseverance on my part, too. Without my favorite pastel paper for months due to what I’ve heard are production issues, I finally took matters into my own hands and tinted the white Wallis sanded paper I had with an acrylic wash. Painting with pastels on a bright white background has a terrible effect on the colors! I can’t believe this idea didn’t dawn on me sooner, but I’m glad to have found a solution until the Belgian Mist colored paper is available again.

You know what my favorite synonym for perseverance is? Doggedness!

Zoe ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

Painting posthumous portraits are simultaneously one of the most painfully difficult and spectacularly rewarding aspects of my job. It makes no sense, I know, but there it is - I guess confronting loss allows the painting process to give the gift of a lifetime's worth of memories.

We started planning Zoe's portrait in August and she suddenly took ill in late September, passing away peacefully and with her family in October. Unbeknownst to me, I chose to paint her on the one month anniversary of her crossing the bridge.

You can laugh all you want, but I think Zoe had a hand in getting herself on my easel today and sending a message of reassurance to her family!

Tools of the Trade

Sure, I could tuck my brushes in empty tin cans, but I am a sucker for pretty things. And when those pretty things come from a good friend, that means I have a small piece of her keeping me company in the studio.

Katie Sue came to the Misha May Foundation flea-ridden, with worms, mites, and mange. Volunteers thought she was a senior dog, but a trip to the vet revealed that she was just a year old pup who had seen way too much of a bad life. Katie Sue’s life turned around though, and with lots of TLC, she blossomed into the sweet girl she’s now become. This painting will be an entry into the Canine Art Guild’s 2011 Helping Paws - All Creatures Great and Small Exhibition. A portion of proceeds from sales of this painting will be donated to the Misha May Foundation. Stay tuned for show details!

The Happiness Project

I am just starting to read this book after hearing marvelous things from a couple friends.

I asked yesterday if anyone had read it, and got some remarkable responses.

One reader theorized that Painting a Dog a Day WAS my own Happiness Project (thanks FS!!).

I think she's right!!

Home Alone

Next weekend is the annual Artists' Studio & Gallery Tour in Rappahannock County, Virginia where I live. My studio is not on the tour this year but I am excited to report that my work will be represented in the River District Arts' Confluent Gallery which is one of the stops on the tour (and where I am an associate artist member). I submitted two paintings for consideration by the jury. They asked me to bring both--one a floral and the other the dog painting shown below:

Titled "Home Alone", the painting depicts a rather forlorn Boxer wondering where his humans have gone. I often think about what our dogs must think when we leave them alone for hours at a time and if they really do get to wondering if we're ever coming back. This painting is based (with permission) on a friend's photo of his "best friend" dog from his teenage years. It is done in watercolor and is 15 x 22 (or as we watercolorists say, a half sheet).

It painting will be on display at the Confluent Gallery from November 5, 2011 through December 5, 2011 and will be for sale there. If you happen to be in Sperryville, VA during that time stop at River District Arts and see it in person!

My Wallis pastel paper still has not arrived, so my foray into acrylics continues – I’ve got to keep working because the deadline for the Canine Art Guild’s Helping Paws: All Creatures Great and Small Exhibition is coming soon! Subject matter can be any rescued animals - and Mookie and Maya are two of the dogs I chose to paint. (Well, Maya gets the limelight here as you can see!)

Animal Control asked the Misha May Foundation to help these two siblings find homes. Both Maya and Mookie were placed and are living happily ever after in their forever homes.

I had an entirely different concept when I set up to paint today. I wanted the pup smaller on the canvas, with her entire body draped sveltly across the painting. But each time I blocked her in, she wanted to be bigger. I'd rub her out and start over, and every time she returned, she was flowing over the edges.

So I stopped fighting, and just let her be.

This will be another of my entries for this year's Canine Art Guild's "Helping Paws: All Creatures Great and Small" exhibition. This is an online show that supports animal welfare through the artists' philanthropy (each piece's sale benefits a specific animal welfare group) and awards (cash prizes go not to the artist, but to the animal welfare groups).

The online show will go live in December, but meanwhile I am getting my entries ready. I'm looking for one more muse; they have to be a rescued pet hailing from a 501c rescue group that is still functioning. You may email non-flash photos to me for consideration - and THANK YOU!!

In Memory of K9 Cade

Last summer, Burton (Michigan) police dogCade was killed in an accident. In his memory, multiple groups in this community have rallied together, hosting a fundraiser tomorrow evening.

Their goal? To raise $10,000 through the sale of sloppy joes and raffle tickets - just enough money to bring a new police dog to town.

I am proud to support this effort (my sister-in-law works for one of the organizations involved) by donating a Painting a Dog a Day gift certificate valued at $250.

More Lemonade - 'Sweet Dreams' portrait of a pug by Beth Lowell

Last May I was struggling with a pastel of a pug. After the difficulty I had, I decided to try painting more of them. It's been awhile since I had the opportunity to paint another one, and so when I came to care for Daisy, a sweet senior, I grabbed the chance to shoot some photos of her and give it a whirl.

Since then, my laptop mysteriously reconfigured itself and many of my files were lost, including my shots of Daisy. Not to be thwarted, I took more photos.

I couldn't wait to start on the piece, but when I reached for a new sheet of Wallis sanded pastel paper, I realized I was out.

I immediately went online, ordered it, and waited. And waited. Finally I checked the status of my order and to my horror, discovered that demand for the paper was so high that the manufacturer can't keep up with orders - I am expecting it in two weeks to a month!

So, once again, life has given me another pug related opportunity to make lemonade... Here is the result - an acrylic painting of Daisy.

"Well, Hello, Gorgeous," 8" x 15", portrait of a mixed breed dog adopted from the Michigan Humane Society by a friend of a friend. Ruby now leads a charmed life, glowing and beautiful from the inside out.

Done in Golden Open Acrylics on Ampersand Gessobord, I shared multiple in process photos inside the Mobile Uploads folder on my studio's Facebook page.

This painting is headed to the Canine Art Guild's "Helping Paws: All Creatures Great and Small" exhibition next month. In this annual show, all the paintings feature animals that were, at one point in their lives, homeless. Proceeds from the sale of all the artwork benefits animal welfare groups around the world, and the People's Choice award goes to animal welfare as well. When Ruby's painting sells, a generous donation will be made to the Michigan Humane Society.

I'll share updates on the exhibition as the show dates approach, but meanwhile, enjoy Ms. Ruby!!

Complementary Colors

When choosing the palette for your painting (or even a room in your home), consider colors that fall opposite each other on the color wheel.

When placed together, they create a visual tingle.

Hence my choice of the faded orange couch to complement the pale blue pillows.

Tallulah doesn't have a speck of black in her. She's a variety of blues and purples, with just a couple splashes of that orange. Again, complements.

She sits there with anticipation, amped up even more so by her surroundings. Just like a queen.

I recently took a workshop with Elizabeth St. Hilaire and I fell in love with the process. However she has such a distinct style I needed to be a bit different. Instead of using painted paper all over this 16 x 20 gessoed board, I decided to paper the face and ears of the Lab. I also added paper to the water. Hunting throught the art store I found fabric gel. Perfect. So, painting with Golden Acrylics and the fabric gel I finished the rest of the painting adding extra paint and gel to the balls. I love how it came out. I'm feeling a series coming.

I ask my clients to share a bit of the dogs' personalities with me, just so that I get a strong sense of who they are in addition to what they look like.

Here's what I learned about Katie (on the left) and Mollie (on the right):

"Katie's a jumper, a barker, a kisser, and a total nut. She's also a total spaniel - where she wants to be is RIGHT NEXT TO YOU, if not on top of you - and she loves nothing in the world so much as a belly rub. Except possibly food."

"Molly's got a hefty dose of Chow Zen. She's also got a lot of street smarts - which means, in part, that she knows how to catch her own food. I can number at least three occasions where I stood on the sidewalk and said "DROP IT. DROP IT. DO NOT EAT IT. Ohh, crap. DON'T LICK ME, LIZARD BREATH." "

So there you have it. Katie and Mollie. And an unfortunate lizard.

I really appreciate your show of support after declaring yesterday a mental health day. I was showered with emails, messages, and stories of your own.

I am most definitely a Type A, OCD, Over Achiever, Perfectionist sort of person. It is very difficult for me to walk away from work that has to be done (unless, that is, the work in question is housework!).

I thoroughly enjoyed myself, though.

And I'll have to remember not to wait so long for the next one.

Autumn Splendor by Dawn Secord

This is the first painting in my newest series, the Seasons Series. It is the "fall" season. There were several background photos used for the painting taken at different times in the year.
For the painting to really have the feel of fall and for color harmony in the painting, a great deal of warm reds and yellows were incorporated into the background that were not in the reference photos.
The model for this painting I had met several times over the years and is a Best In Show winner. When in Wisconsin a few years ago his owner had commissioned me to paint his portrait. During the photo session, something in the pine trees caught his attention and he swung his head around to look at the distraction. Dragon Slayers II, A Lesson Painting, Part II ~~ by Kimberly Kelly Santini

If you are joining us in progress, here's yesterday's post to get you up to speed.

And what I should have done yesterday which I totally neglected to do was give a shout out of tremendous thanks to fellow artist and friend Julie Bender for sharing her Vizsla puppies with us. Please forgive me, Julie!

You'll see that the changes in today's steps are a little less dramatic - that's because I am making smaller marks and adjustments, given the bulk of the work has already been done. I'm also using glazes (layers of translucent paint) to soften or brighten my values and edges. Oddly enough, though, this stage involves more care and consideration, and thusly more time, than what I established yesterday.

I love the final, final bits, when I get to add dashes of unexpected color here and there. And suggest a few whiskers. This is it, all done!

Dragon Slayers II, A Lesson Painting, Part I ~~ by Kimberly Kelly Santini

To combat the gray and gloom outside my window (and literally in the news and everywhere I seem to go), I decided today's painting had to be lighthearted and fun.

Here's the beginning of the second painting in my Dragon Slayers series. This one is a 10" square Raymar panel.

I started with a rough outline of my subject, as I was making some shifts from the original reference photo and wanted to make certain the square format was going to work. (Yes, I could have done a thumbnail sketch and prepared more conventionally for this, but I was too anxious to get to work) After sketching, I laid down a bold wash, using warm colors for the foreground and my subject, and a cooler green at the top to help my background fade into the distance.

Grabbing a wide flat brush, I started roughing in my focal point, working from it outwards. I'm not focusing on anything other than defining values and starting to carve form. My marks are sloppy and my color is not nearly precise. I work quickly because the majority of these marks will ultimately be covered with other layers, so I am not going to stress or slave over them quite yet.

(Nope, it's not your eyes - my pic is blurry - sorry!)

Once I covered the majority of the canvas with a layer of marks, I went back in and redrew the faces very carefully. Now I am paying better attention to form, relationships, and color. And making sure I leave plenty of strategically placed "peek a boo pockets" - those bits of boldly colored underpainting.

Carol Marine

Many of you will recognize Carol's name, as she is one of my long time daily painting mentors. A fabulously talented artist and equally gifted instructor, she and her husband David have never been less than exhorbitantly generous with their support of the art community.

So it was with great sadness that I learned her home - and studio - burned to the ground over the weekend.

It was just one house of hundreds that have burned - and are burning still - as the wildfires rake their way across Texas.

If you are so inclined, a fund has been set up for Carol and her family.

There's also various organizations that are stepping up to help displaced families, and of course, animals, too.

The flooding in the North East is heartbreaking, and there are hardships all around us - we need not look far.

If you cannot give financial assistance or volunteer your time, please consider sending prayers and karma in their place. Compassion is always greatly appreciated.

My client picked up the 5x7 watercolor of her Beagle, Pudge, a beloved family pet who recently passed away. This pose was a picture from a younger Pudge, so he had to be aged. I was not happy with an earlier version, but this one worked out and the client agreed. Everyone's happy.

Despite a day fraught with interruptions - the phone, carpools, a furiously barking dog, and a myriad of other events trying to draw me astray - I finished my painting. A rather ambitious one to boot. Doesn't matter that it's the nth hour. I'm very pleased with myself.

Seems extra fitting that I also was reading something today about unabashedly allowing your happiness to shine. This girl has that part down - we could all take a lesson from her!

Meanwhile, I'm off to bed - looks like tomorrow could be a repeat of today.

This is a commissioned portrait of two dogs, one in the twilight of his life, the other a sage youngster comparatively speaking. Done in Golden Open Acrylics. A special thank you to my new collector SB, who's been planning and waiting patiently for her painting.

Marley (the Beagle) had been scheduled for a single portrait but when his Mom shared a remarkable photo of Marley and little (bigger) sister Billie slowly ambling off together, the concept for his painting changed completely.

He left this world peacefully in July, at the ripe old age of 15.

I just love how this composition sums up his relationship with his family. Always at their side.

What's the difference between a painted sketch and a painting?

Great question!

Painted sketches are done in acrylics on paper, more loosely detailed, a little whimsical. They must be displayed behind glass. Their size (rarely larger than 9" x 12") and complexity depend entirely on your budget. They start at $49.

Paintings are done on museum quality panels, carry more detail and density of color (comparatively speaking), and are also priced based on size and complexity. Paintings come with a varnish and are rigid enough to be displayed on a table easel or leaning on a shelf. A 4" square miniature painting starring one animal is $209 - prices go up from there.

Visuals usually help, too.

This is the live demonstration painting I did on Saturday atRaining Cats and Dogs in Frankenmuth, Michigan. I moved a good hunk of my studio onto their front porch, and set up for an idyllic day of pushing color about and chatting it up with passers-by.

For the record, I am so pleased that they invited me to hang my artwork in their store AND allowed me to come work with them for a day. I can't wait to do it again.

I recently received a call from a very nice woman that asked if I would paint her children. We got together, discussed her ideas and I showed her originals and examples of all my work. During the meeting, I apologized because all my recent work over the years rarely involves people or kids. I just love doing animals, especially puppies. Animals seem to come much more easily and I decided to turn down the commission. In this economy, I should jump at the chance but felt that I couldn't produce a picture for her that I would be happy with. My art comes from a place deep inside and I need to follow my heart...so more puppies for me.

So you blew off my opening last Saturday night, and look what you missed.......

Gallery 194 invited the Romeo Guild of Art to hang a group show this month.

If you get a chance, please swing by - it is a fabulous exhibit deep with talent from some of my favorite Michigan artists like (we're in no particular order, guys, so don't even think about giving me grief!) Ken Taylor, Barb and Don Clay, Sharon Will, Sue Kwolek, Don Wieland, Jan Filarski, Janet Almstead-Davison, Robert Fionda and Laura Gabriel. Just to name a few.

There was live music, most excellent food and drinks and Mother Nature even provided a spectacular thunderstorm.

And I learned that "A Gentle Breeze", pictured above, earned 2nd Place. On top of that, another of my pieces sold (thank you very much to new collector EW).

My sincerest thanks to the staff at Gallery 194 for this opportunity.

Ladybugs, In Process ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Ladybugs," an in process painting of two Great Dane pups from Ohio Great Dane Rescue (OGDR), and the latest addition to my Gratitude Paintings series. This piece is 12" square, and will be available for purchase when completed (tomorrow?), with the proceeds going to OGDR.

Marley vs The Dragon, Part II A Lesson Painting ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

I took a little break from this one, but finished her up late late late last night. Or was it this morning? oh well, does it really matter?

Here's where we were last week.

And here's the what I did last night (NOTE: in the interest of full disclosure, in addition to painting, I also consumed the better 1/2 of a package of mint oreos):

I started by pulling Marley's gaze down to the dinosaur toy. I also popped a bunch more color into her face. I spent lots of time studying the background - my initial concept included a sidewalk/concrete showdown, but the value range this created wasn't working.

So I brought the game indoors, literally. I added a stack of board games, thinking that would provide both supplemental context and the appropriate values. But in the long run, I realized this competed with Marley's face. Not acceptable.

So out the games went, and instead I laid down a loose and shadowy interpretation of an interior room in the far ground. And I added turquoise/blue washes to the rug so that the dinosaur really popped. (And then whiled away some time looking at various rug patterns online to see if any were suitable for the foreground - no luck there, but I did find one that would be simply marvelous in my front room.)

Finally, just to make it obvious that the dinosaur was a toy, I added a few marbles in.

"Marley vs The Dragon," 16" x 22", Golden Open Acrylics on a gallery stretched canvas, depicting the (now infamous) bulldog pup Marley, a Schleich dinosaur, and a few of my (lost) marbles. This painting is available for purchase through the Orion Art Center (248-693-4986) as part of their Dragon on the Lake Festival.

So what do you think about the first Dragonslayer painting? Is this a series I should continue?

GInger ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Ginger," a commissioned pet portrait of a boxer, 9" x 18". Done in Golden Open Acrylics on an Ampersand Gessobord, Ginger will be headed to a new home shortly (THANK YOU!).

I posted some in process photos on the studio Facebook page if you are interested in seeing Ginger's progression.

Before you peek, though, see if you can guess what color the underpainting is......

I'll give you a hint - it actually factored in as the third color in my triad of orange, green and [fill in the blank]. Using a triad for the basis of the majority of the paint mixtures allows for a rich and harmonious variety of neutrals (this is something we talk about in my painting workshops! I've got another one scheduled for October......).

Meanwhile, down below is a sneak peek at some of the faces (or backsides, as the case may be) that are lining up for their turn on my easel. I've had great fun meeting new critters and taking their photos all summer long.

Sharing the Dog a Day Love

You would love my dear friend Dinah. We call her "The Cupcake Fairy," because she leaves a box of scrumptious goodies on our stoop and ding dong ditches us. She is always up to something wonderful that always results in someone feeling extra special.

Dinah works at a cafe, and she sold her employer on the idea of raising money for a local rescue group.

Last week they began collecting donations for Waggs and Wishes and invited me to hang my artwork on site (proceeds from resulting sales/commissions will be donated too!).

They are so pleased with the addition of real artwork that I've been asked to rotate work on a regular basis.

I think, though, the root of the change lies in the compassion that is now openly displayed via a wall of "pawprints" with donors' pets' names and stories.

Stop by and visit - I'll vouch for Dinah's soup. It's dee-lish.

Abby, Moxie's "big" sister

Heeeere’s Abby! Abby is a good friend of my dog Dasher. When Abby lived closer we walked together almost every day that weather permitted. The dogs look a lot alike, except Abby seems to be a miniature version of Dasher, and people often assume they’re related. They’re still great friends but we miss seeing them as much as we used to. It’s frightening how quickly the time has flown these last ten years, and painting this portrait has been a joy and a celebration of a life well lived. Cheers, Abby!

Yin and Yang Exhibition

The CAG has just published our latest on-line exhibition, titled "Yin and Yang." This show is organized around the ancient theme of Yin Yang, the pull and balance of opposites. CAG members were invited to create work fitting the Yin Yang concept, with their art being displayed on the group's website.

Our jurors, Judy Wood and Juliet Harrison, reviewed the entries and judged based on adherence to the theme, mastery of materials, and excellence of composition. Three Merit Awards were given: Elin Pendleton, Harry Boardman, and Sheona Hamilton-Grant. Merit Award recipients will receive $75 and have their artwork featured on the CAG Merit Hall of Fame (currently under construction).

You are invited to view the exhibition and cast your vote for our final award, that being the $50 People's Choice (please note only one vote per person - duplicate votes will be deleted). Votes may be cast during the first 45 days of the show's publication.

The next CAG exhibition will this fall - our 4th Annual Helping Paws - where artists partner with their favorite shelter or rescue group and awards go to their animal welfare partners instead of the individual artists.

Moxie! - a painting by Beth Lowell

This slightly larger-than-life portrait measuring 11.5" x 8.5" suits Moxie, a character with a larger-than-life personality. This portrait captures him in a rare quiet moment. It's on its way to the framer today and will be heading to its new owner shortly afterward. Next up, Moxie's older sister, Abby. Working on them has been a great experience since I know both dogs so well, and it's been an honor to have been selected to paint them!

Newfoundland Painting by Dawn Secord

This painting was recently completed. The upper image is the completed painting. The lower image is one of the reference photos used for the painting. (To see the reference photo go to my blog at http://www.artofthedog.blogspot.com/

Since Newfoundlands are water dogs, it was decided to have a water scene as the background. The dog's owners live in Southern California so I used some reference photos of surf I'd taken from Laguna Beach several years prior.

The dog's right eye was partially obscured by her coat. In the painting, I cleaned that area up a bit so both eyes were clearly visible. The bright morning light shown too much on her coat casting a silver look. Thus, the photos neglected to reflect her deep black coat. In her painting, the color of the coat is more accurate.

Short Time

I thought I would post a sketch of a wonderful dog named "Nelson", who I got to meet not too long ago. The owners live on Emerald Isle, NC and called to have a portrait painted of him. I went to their house for a photo session on a beautiful warm morning. Nelson is a Schnauzer with boundless energy, but they had noticed a change in him since a cancer had been removed recently. I have gone through the same thing with my Ridgeback "Socks". He bounded around the yard, with me chasing after him trying to capture a few good photographs. We all had a wonderful time laughing at his antics and I got to know him a little bit at least! I received an email less than a month later telling me he had to be put to sleep. What a short time we seem to have with our furry companions. I am looking forward to painting a beautiful watercolor of "Nelson" among the trees in tribute to that day when he gave everyone joy...

Mya, A Lesson Painting, Part I ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

I started a new commission, a 12" x 14" portrait of a gorgeous Husky (Malamute? I don't know the difference - someone educate me please!). Since the painting was too big for me to complete in one day, I decided to give you yet another step-by-step.

Don't you love this underpainting? It's Light Turquoise (Pthalo) and while I don't use it that often, when I do it just makes me smile. It will add the perfect accent to all the purples and blues in Mya's coat, and play a nice compliment to the warmer buff tones in her shoulders.

You can see my sketch, done loosely in a paler version of the underpainting - I just identified where Mya's face was going to sit, and roughed out the shape of her skull before reaching for more color.

Here I've started to sculpt her face - with a Husky, because their skin and fur thickly blanket their head, it is key that I get the planes identified properly at this stage. Otherwise she'll look like a stuffed animal.

And because I like to talk to my muses while they are in the studio, I went for her eyes and nose next. Getting an area of the canvas done correctly in the earlier stages allows for better decision making - and the eyes identify my darkest darks and my lightest lights, so I can base all my other paint mixtures upon their relationship to Mya's eyes.

I can actually hear her breathing now.

While I adored the underpainting, it was distracting, so I mixed a harmonious gray (using the light turquoise and cadmium red - opposites on the color wheel) and glazed various tints of it overtop the background for a lovely effect.

Isn't she gorgeous?

Pugs pet portrait by Terry Albert

I've been doing some experimenting with my art. This portrait is 10" x 20" on canvas, painted in acrylics. To add a touch of bling, I added a little bit of glitter to their eyes, and the client loved it. The dogs, Oscar and Cilla, go to work every day with their owner, Lynn, at the Buried Bone here in Poway, California.

The canvas is 1 1/2" deep, so it doesn't need to be framed. Here is the photo I worked from:

As you see, I moved the two dogs closer together to enhance the composition. I usually work on illustration board or watercolor paper, then cut a mat to frame the finished piece, so this is a new way of working for me. I also usually add detail in pencil, and it is a big change for me to do the entire painting in just paint, no mixed media. Also, on canvas, I am stuck with the composition, I can't just cut off an edge if I want to crop the painting differently when it's done! I'm sure I will be switching back and forth between the techniques for awhile until I decide which method to pursue.

Maggie, A Lesson Painting, Part I of II ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

Before running away to Saratoga over the weekend, I left Maggie on my easel with a cloak of rainbow colors. Today I got the chance to pick up my brushes and finish her portrait.

I began the painting session by laying down wide swathes of local color - however, you'll notice there remain small strips of the bold, hot hues around the edges of the forms. I'll leave these "peek-a-boo pockets" all over the painting - they will add some color zing to the end result.

After identifying the overall background value of the couch cushions, I defined the lighter stripes, focusing on the drape of the fabric and not so much on the proper values. These I would correct later with layers of glaze (translucent paint).

I also toyed with the patterned couch pillows, but determined they created too much pattern, and painted them out. I want the viewer's eyes to rest on Maggie, not to get distracted by a wealth of other details.

And here she is as she stands now - the stripes have been pushed back with some glazes, and the greatest density of detail is packed into the triangle made by her eyes and nose.

I'm waiting to hear from my client if there are any other tweaks needed to further capture her likeness. This waiting time is the absolute hardest part of painting portraits.

The piece is titled simply "Maggie." It's larger than life at 12" x 20", and done in Golden Open and Heavy Body Acrylics on an Ampersand Gessobord.

I think it is always fun to see where a piece starts and how it ends, I hope you enjoy seeing it also.

This piece measures 9 1/2 in length, 4 inches wide and 5 1/4 at the tip of the highest point. The marble base is 10 1/2 in length and 5 inches wide by 1 inch thick.   Available in the black patina with scrubbed back bronze lifts under the feet and black marble base.

This is the artwork I created for the Skyline Dog Fancier's Kennel Club.

It was such an honor to be asked again to do the artwork for Skyline Dog Fancier's.   The image of this 11 x 14 oil on canvas will be used for their catalog cover, trophies and a large banner which will hang next to the one they did last year of my work and years to come in their main auditorium where the groups and Best in Show are held.   The images for the paintings are submitted by the kennel club. The design and painting are left up to me.   This year the Portugese Podengo Pequeno Club of America will hold their National Specialty at the show. They are in the misc. group of the AKC seeking full status for the hound group.

Join them for the second annual Harvest Moon Classic, a collaboration of Skyline Dog Fanciers and Del Valle Dog Club. Thursday, October 20 at 8:00am - October 24, 2011 at 6:00pm

This is a portrait of my whippet "Bailey". I know the last commission I posted was name Bailey which was my neighbor's but this Bailey is one of my therapy dogs. I took patriotic pictures of my dogs last 4th of July and liked this photo so much that I painted it.
