This is Saki. She is 11 years old and has been the best friend of a young man for that many years. Two weeks ago this young man went off to college for the first time.
His father had contacted me many many months ago and asked me to paint Saki. His goal was for the portrait to be completed by the time his son went off to college so his son could have the painting of Saki to take with him. What a heart breaking situation. To view the reference photo of Saki, please go to my blog at http://www.artofthedog.blogspot.com
The painting of Saki is now off at a college somewhere, hopefully reminding a special young man of his very special friend. That young man also has a very special father.

untitled - dalmation work in progress
Dalmatian - Untitled work in progress
With my solo canine exhibition at Mill Pond Gallery fast approaching.. its time to knuckle down and finish off the final pieces for this exhibition.
My exhibition will feature canines in both pastels and acrylics .. this will be the largest of my pastel pieces. I'm finding this piece a lot of fun as I'm working on canson pastel board..
I rarely use board preferring to work on paper as I'm able to choose if I will work on the smooth or the rough side.. with the board I have no such choice and must work on the rough side..
Which is proving a challenge but a lot of fun making me work in a totally different way.
Stay tuned for more updates shortly on this piece

Irish Setter by Dawn Secord
This is a mini portrait of "Hogan". Finished this pastel painting recently, just haven't had time to post.
Hogan's owner had sent me several photos of him for this mini portrait. There were several photos that were fabulous candidates...

for the painting. In the end, his expression in one photo tugged at her heart and showed his personality. That is the photo we used for this painting.
He was a wonderful dog. I will miss him too. Just wished they were with us longer. My parrot, Jade, was raised by us since she was a hatchling. She is 24 years old now. What we wouldn't give to have our dogs and cats live that long!

"TRUDY" custom dog portrait, oil on canvas
by Sarah Gayle Carter
"Trudy" is recent commission, purchased as a gift from mother to daughter - a portrait of her much loved, best friend, Trudy.
I love fluffy dogs. For me, hugging a fuzzy dog is half the fun of having one. I mean really, isn't the feel of all that soft warm fur a big part of doggy yummy-ness? (Okay, once a hedonist, always a hedonist, I'm incorrigible).
However, I love to paint dogs with good bone structure. With planes and angles and heads with real sculptural qualities.
Now Trudy's here has got it all. And she's a winner on another score as well - her coat color! After all, I don't call my portraits "Color Dogs" for nothing!

Adding to my collection I just finished another painting for my Dog Show Series. Every year I have the privilege of attending the WKC in New York City. A week of dog show greats, fun with friends and seeing some of the top dogs compete. This is the winner of Best In Show at Westminster Kennel Club 2012, Madison Square Gardens. Malachy the Pekingnese wins! Owned by Iris Love and David Fitzpatrick.
For your enjoyment a video about the show.

Cirneco dell"Etna by Dawn Secord
Here is my latest commission. I've been affectionately referring to the dogs as the "C's".
Cirneco dell'Etna (plural Cirnechi) is a small breed of dog originally from Sicily. This hound was historically used to hunt rabbits and can work for hours without food or water.[citation needed] The breed also has a keen sense of smell and is primarily built for endurance over harsh terrain such as that of Mount Etna. It is the smallest of the Mediterranean island hunting hounds, the others being the Pharaoh Hounds and Ibizan Hounds.
Today they are increasingly kept for the sport of conformation showing and as pets, due to their low coat maintenance and friendly nature, although as an active hound they do need regular exercise. A Cirneco should measure from 43-51 cm (17-20in) and weigh between 10–12 kg (22-26lb). As with other breeds, those from hunting stock can lie outside these ranges. Information courtesy of "Wikipedia"
The owner of the dogs gave me a number of photos of the dogs at different stages from puppy to adult. I stepped out of my box and asked her if I could choose the photos rather than her choosing them. Since they were all wonderful photos - she gave me that artistic liberty. It has been a fun journey learning about a new breed. It is my understanding that the breed has been around since at least 1533. They are fun little dogs and they appear to have quite adorable temperaments from what I've gleaned from conversations with their owner. Hope you enjoy the painting!

Cannonball!! by Kimberly Kelly Santini
![]()
"Cannonball!!" 11-3/4" x 19", acrylic on museum quality panel, depicting a fearless dock-diving Nita. I have big plans for this painting, but if you are interested in purchasing, let me know, and I'll get you on the list. I don't doubt that "Cannonball" will find a home quickly, and I do want it to be yours, but I also want to exhibit her for just a wee bit in the meanwhile, so please bear with me.
I started this painting late last nite - in process photos are on the studio facebook page.
My favorite part of the painting? the water bits, where, close-up, they become entirely abstract, just pure color and shape.
And Nita's squinched eyes.
You might recognize this girl....... I've painted her before. Huge thanks to Nita's mom who shared some most extraordinary photos when I told her of my dogs-playing-in-water-ideas (and there are more of these paintings to come!).
I'm lining works up for a fall series of exhibitions and installations. Then it'll be time to buckle down and focus on holiday commissions (you want in? better email me now!)
Kim, who might just treat herself to a plate full of cookies just because of this painting. And finding the $%^#ing retainer (please see below for full details), which I did, all on my own, because while some people look for things, they look with eyes not entirely opened.

Fun and Games
Unlimited Fun and Games were had at the Santini household last nite when someone mentioned that they had lost their retainer.
I am not afraid of dumpster diving, and I will freely admit to cementing an appliance into a child's mouth after several such events (with our dentist's approval - don't go calling social services on me). But I was not thrilled at all to hear that dreaded question, "Has anyone seen my retainer?" Especially after we'd only had the darned thing for 6 - count em, 6 -days.
The whole search conveniently overlapped with a neighbor dog's insane 2+ hour bark fest. Which supplied the perfect excuse to uncork a bottle of red and clean out cupboards.
Which is also why I didn't get a painting finished and posted last nite.
However the orthodontics were found, the dog eventually got let into the house, I blocked in "Cannonball," someone went to bed with their blessed retainer in place, and everyone slept like babies.

Cooper ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini
![]()
"Cooper," 8" x 10", a commissioned portrait of a dearly beloved golden retriever who recently crossed the bridge. This is done in acrylics on a museum quality panel. Cooper's painting has been spoken for, but I'm happy to privately discuss painting something like this starring your dog (or cat or horse or rabbit or guinea pig or whatever). Inquiries may come to me.
In process images are on the studio Facebook page.
Signed
Kim, who was delighted to open her palette up today, even if it did smell rather skunky and had a bit of a science project growing over the cadmiums.......

The Lure of the Easel
It's been 2 weeks since I painted in my studio. It's been nearly a year since I did a deep clean in there.
This week my goal was to do a wall each day - pull things down, wipe every surface, purge and reorganize.
A great concept, but not terribly realistic.
Monday I unpacked and did laundry. Tuesday I tried to dent my email volumes. Wednesday I buckled down and cleared off a wall of bookshelves. Yesterday I bailed for time with the kids. Today the easel won out.
What are the odds of another wall getting some attention this week?

Nap Time
"Nap Time"
8x10
Watercolor
Cynthia Brassfield
This is my newest work, a labor of love. This is Champ, my adopted English Setter who passed away 7 weeks ago at the age of 15. We adopted him at the age of 12 after his owner dumped him at
the shelter. 3 years were just not enough with him and I hope this painting honors him in the
most special way!
