Milo & Howard new drawing by Sheona Hamilton-Grant

So here you have it!

My latest commissioned portrait.
Not just one but two, deux, zwei, dos, tvÄ...

I was asked to portray a double bundle of cuteness!
Milo and Howard, two adorable Welsh Corgi's, now have their own special mark in time.
Everything, from their low-set yet sturdy built, big eyes, alert ears, fluffy "cheeks", bold and friendly aura, made my pencils day. As a result: an energetic and accurate pencil drawing smothered in detail.

Simply said: I'm smitten!

Ball Boy by Denise Laurent

This new painting is a young Dogue de Bordeaux with his ball. I wanted to keep this one very simple, just his shape on a plain background. He has a lovely profile and those beautiful colours in his coat contrast wonderfully with the blues in the background.

In memory of Zarley - by artist Sue Linton

Ashley contacted me wanting a portrait created in memory of  Zarley her Portugese Waterdog who had passed away.
I cropped the reference photo so we would get Zarley larger in the portrait. The complete wording on his bed says
" If my dreams would come true it would rain bones"

Scarlett O'Hara--a Boston Terrier

Scarlett O'Hara, Boston Terrier
11 x 11, watercolor

Scarlett is one of the dogs submitted for my Doggitude book project. The challenge with painting her was her liver-colored skin and those light reflections in her eyes. It took a lot of color -mixing and auditioning on a scrap piece of watercolor paper before I was satisfied that I had arrived at the right color for her skin. There is a surprising amount of violet in that mix! As for the reflections in her eyes, I have never painted eye reflections that complex before. Going on the advice of master watercolorists who paint highly realistic works, I had to let go of what I thought I was seeing in the reference photo (an eye with some light in it) and simply paint the color shapes/values, almost as one would an abstract painting. I did that but up close, I worried that I had totally messed up the painting (having saved the eyes for last). However, once I stepped back and took another look, I realized that the reflections "read" right--at least to my eye. Watercolor painting is always a bit of an exploration, which is what makes it so fun--especially when (like in this case) that exploration results in a good discovery that I can use in future work.

If you'd like to keep up with my progress on the Doggitude project, the best way is to "Like" Doggitude: The Book on Facebook. I post updates frequently, including images of works in progress so you can see how they evolve from a line drawing to a finished painting.

Wasnt Me - take 2

Wasnt Me - take 2

Its funny you finish a work of art and think yeap Im happy with that.. then you photograph it and take a look at it again from the photograph....

Thats when you see glaring errors that you just cant live with.. Wasnt Me has been through that process.. I just wasnt happy with him and realised that the image I was working from had a twist in his little face.

We its all well and good to be true to the image your working from but at times you have to use your artistic nouce and change things.. So thats just what Ive done with this little fellow.

Ive adjusted his face and balanced it out so now he doesnt look like its twisted.

So meet Wasnt Me take 2.. as an artist you should never be scared to admit your not happy with a work but in saying this you must also be prepared to adjust what your not happy with.

Gus ~~ by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Gus," a commissioned portrait of a bull dog, 8" x 10," done in acrylics on a museum quality panel, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries may come to me.

You gotta love a man who gifts his bride a pet portrait. Talk about starting things off proper!

If you know this man, or this bride, or this dog, please keep this a secret - Gus's portrait will be waiting for them to return from their honeymoon.

And you know, I can do this sort of thing for you, too. But I can't read your mind - you've gotta first send me an email.

Thanks, as always, for supporting and following along with my artwork!

"Untitled," 1981, photo courtesy of Christies

Jean-Michel Basquiat

How I wish I were in NYC this week, so as to get a peek at Basquiat's "Untitled" (pictured above) before it travels to London for auction at Christies. Whether or not you like the piece (it's predicted to break Basquiat's previous auction record, with an estimate of $20million), there's no denying it's importance, and Basquiat's influence, in defining contemporary art history.

My favorite job in "The Real World" happened to me fresh out of college, working at a fine art auction house. You never knew what would come in the door on any given day - a genuine Tiffany floor lamp, a two-sided Picasso drawing, a Dale Chihuly bowl, a Grandma Moses painting.

I learned to ask questions and listen to more than the answers given, consult experts, and open my mind up to the glory of the artists' vision. Whether or not I would choose to live with it, whether or not I was able to afford it, whether or not I could even connect with the work, each piece carried it's own redeeming qualities.

And what I wouldn't give to be a Christies employee today, taking my breaks in front of a contemporary masterpiece and soaking up a little Basquiat-ian influence.

I would love to hear your thoughts on which artists inspire you and why. Please leave a comment!

Field Guide a new small work by Molly A Poole

"Field Guide" is my latest small work. This work is inspired by the local farmers busy planting the fields the past few weeks. Although I haven't seen anyone tending the fields with a canine companion, I imagine it would be more fun with a four-legged friend.
6"x6" open acrylic on 1/2" birch panel.

Joy ~~ Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Joy," fresh off the easel, another from the "Cherished" series, 6" square, acrylic on museum quality panel, depicting a Chinese Crested Powder Puff, Zephyr (aka Fleef, Fweet and Fleefles). Isn't she the most expressive thing you have ever seen?

Zephyr's Mom gets first dibs, but should she pass, the painting will be offered to the next taker. "Joy" can be yours for $299 to new collectors, or $269 to repeat offenders. Inquiries may come to me.

Several in process views of this Muppet, err, princess, are on the studio's Facebook page. Take a peek and comment or ask questions about my process or the ingenue herself - I'll get you answers asap!

And please don't forget that inquiries, including how you can get a portrait of your own dog, can always come to me

It's too late to arrange for Father's Day delivery of a painting, BUT it's not too late to coordinate a gift certificate, and let Dad take part in the process. Which, honestly, I think is the most fun.

Next, that is, to the reveal!!

Thanks, as always, for supporting and following along with my artwork!
