Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Legs II (Boxer Pup)," painted sketch, image approximately 6" x 5", total paper size 8" x 7", Golden Open Acrylics on multimedia artboard, $59. Inquiries (including booking your own Dog a Day pet portrait/painted sketch starting at $29) may always come to me.

I was feeling a little drained this morning and couldn't commit to doing a full scale painting so decided to do some painted sketches instead. The first one I tossed (it was too big of a mess to try and save), but this little guy, he shines. And the third sketch (still on the easel) is quickly becoming a full scale painting on it's own.

My reference photo was taken at our Homecoming Parade last fall (same time as theBasset painting, Legs I). I wonder if this little lady has grown into her feet yet....

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family. Have a sunshiney weekend -

Something New

I had been thinking about painting this piece since last summer, 2009.  I took the photo of a friend's Golden Retriever, Riley, swimming in the Shenandoah River next to her home.  I loved how the photograph came out, and was excited to start.  I didn't start, maybe the idea had to brew in my mind for a while, before I could start it.  I wanted to share the beginning stages of the painting, and eventually share the finished piece.  I am painting in oils, on a 42"x30" cotton canvas.  I want the one that is very yellow to dry a little more before I go back into it.  Riley is a blond, Golden, so I want his light coat to glow against the dark greens of the river.  I haven't posted anything on this blog before, so I look forward to doing more.  I have been more involved with painting equines and landscapes, and decided with all my own dogs, and the many dogs belonging to friends, I have quite a group to use as models.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Boxer Pup (Painted Sketch)," paper 4" x 5", image approximately 3" x 4", acrylic on multimedia artboard, $39 plus s&h.

Multimedia artboard is a museum quality sturdy as all heck paper that accepts paint and graphite and a mess of other abuse beautifully. I've been playing around with it and am very impressed - so much so, that it is my new surface of choice, in addition to the Ampersand Gessobords.

And, the multimedia artboard allows me to offer a lower price point on portraits and commissioned pieces. I'm calling these new paintings "Painted Sketches," and they will start at $29 plus s&h for a 4" square.

You can see from the little Boxer pup above, the Painted Sketches are lovely loose paintings that equally embrace the materials and the animal's personality. They aren't as detailed or polished as my other works, and will require framing (and protection under glass), but they carry a unique charm and character all their own.

Won't they make fabulous gifts? Mother's Day is coming up...... act quickly and I can squeeze your special project in.

Inquiries, for Painted Sketches and the Dog a Day Portraits, may always come to me.

Oh yeah, and if you want to buy this little guy, send me a note. This is an original painting, and when he's gone, he's gone.

One last note - for those of you who are fellow artists - the April Virtual pARTy was announced earlier today. Artwork is due by midnight EST on Saturday, April 24th. Please visit The Virtual pARTy blog for all the details.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"SUV (Ammo)," from the Sunday Drivers series of paintings, 6" x 8", Golden Open Acrylics on a Raymar panel, $379. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life, including Dogue de Bordeaux's) may always come to me.

The inspiration photo for Ammo's the Mastiff's portrait came from my friend Judy Wood, an artist with an incredible eye. She uncannily knows the sorts of images that drive me crazy, and I am always inspired to reach for my brushes when an email arrives from her with attachments.

With "SUV" (anyone get the pun?) I'm up to a dozen paintings in the Sunday Drivers series, not quite enough (yet) to warrant a book of their own. I invite you to send (non-flash) pics of your dogs and automobiles/trucks (for instance, I would love to do a horse trailer with a couple terriers lounging in the shade) for consideration. You have no obligation to purchase the resulting painting. Photographs can come toksantini@turtledovedesigns.com - I always acknowledge receipt of materials.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family. Have a wonderful weekend!

"Water's Edge" a new Labrador Retriever watercolor by Molly A Poole

I just made the final touches on "Water's Edge" an 11"x14" watercolor and a bit of casein on 140lb HP Fabriano watercolor paper this morning.
This painting was inspired by a wonderful photo that Trish Richardson/Twin Maples Labradors generously gave me permission to use for reference. Thank you Trish!
Once again, I am drawn to a very familiar subject for many of my paintings...Labrador Retrievers and water. The pattern of the wet Lab coat, the marsh grasses and the action of the broken water all require a playful and spontaneous hand. This painting will be entered into an upcoming juried show or part of a group show this summer...details to follow.

Borzoi National Specialty Juried Art Show

I have two photos that juried into the Borzoi National Specialty Art Show in May. Several other members also have work in the show. I will be in attendance at the reception since my family lives in Cincinnati and am looking forward to seeing the work in person.
The entire show is online and can be viewed at

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

FROM THE TOP: "Lilly as a Pup," and "Lilly (Havanese Study)," both 4" x 6", commissioned Havanese dog portraits (THANK YOU!). My client gets her pick of one, and the first to ask nicely can have the other ($199 plus s&h). Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

I am starting to understand my Golden Open Acrylics a bit more, and with that comes an increased comfort zone in brushwork and color. I ended up swapping out the open Titanium White for my Heavy Body white which seems more opaque - perhaps that led to the density or darker colors I achieved in these two portraits (last week was very pastel, which isn't altogether a bad thing, but different than how I normally paint).

I have some cat portraits lined up for the remainder of this week, another installment in my Sunday Drivers series of paintings (dogs in cars), and am working on choosing a photograph for the next Virtual pARTy (which will either happen this Wed through Sat or next week's Wed through Sat). I've also got a couple paintings in process that I may try to pick away at. Busy times in the studio.

But always fun and games.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Irish Setters & Dachshund by Dawn Secord

This painting was so much fun to create. Charlie, the doxie, was such a hoot. He has so much energy and charisma. The owners of the dogs were quite interested how I was going to arrange the three dogs in the composition.

I took in excess of 100 photos of the three dogs in Lancaster, Pennsylvania last June. When it came to creating the painting, Charlie just fit in perfectly sitting below his two best friends.

Hope you enjoy viewing this painting as much as I had creating it!

Adoption Challenge - Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

How can you say no to these faces? Well, I'm going to make it even harder to say no. So, if you are a wimp or a pushover, stop reading right now.

In celebration of Mother's Day, I'm offering 10% off every single painting in my Etsy store. There's over 100 paintings there, looking for Mom's. I've spent today sorting through my archives and storage, and listed every unsold Dog a Day painting and a handful of gallery stretched canvases on Etsy.

Think you're up to the challenge? These puppies (and kitties and horses and what have yous) need new homes!

Use the coupon code "MOM" during checkout and I'll credit your total 10%.

Or, even better, use the coupon code "SHELTERMOM" during checkout, pay the full price, and have 10% more of your sale** donated to animal welfare (I actively work with the Oakland Pet Fund, a no kill shelter in Auburn Hills Michigan, and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah).

As always, inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me. And, what the heck, I'll honor the "MOM" and "SHELTERMOM" discounts on new portraits and projects booked between now and Mother's Day.

Being a Mom is hard work. We need a little bit of a break every so often.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.
Kim

**Did you know that I donate 10% of my sales to animal welfare? Thanks to you, my collectors and supporters, I enjoy brightening our world through my paintings & through supporting responsible shelter efforts.

Foxey

This is a recently finished commission of a Pom named...you guessed it, Foxey.  He is getting up in years now and his owners were surprised by a friend of theirs who commissioned me to paint it for them.  They were thrilled with their very thoughtful gift and Foxey now resides in a place of honor (over the couch).  Now that's a gift that keeps on giving!  If you would like to gift someone with a portrait, or even give yourself a cherished memento of your beloved friend, email me at judwah2000@wildblue.net or my website at judebatesart.com and we can discuss your ideas...

Yours in Paint,
Jude

Jigsaw dogs

I finally managed to get not one, but two pieces of dog art done for the Canine Art Guild 5th anniversary show. One of them was the first in a series I plan to do, and this is a slight variation on that original theme. The one in the CAG show features one of my own Boxers, this one showcases my grand-dog Arrow. The neat thing about this concept is that I can customize the idea to specific breeds or even to an individual dog. It was, as always, a learning experience for me, but one that I'm glad I took the time for. As with most of my work, it is my own digital photo images reworked in Photoshop. Check out the many wonderful dog images at the CAG site. My original version of this one is at the bottom right of the second page of the show images, and my other image is at the bottom right of the fourth page.

New paintings by Terry Albert

I have several new pieces to share with you that I created for the Doggon-It! show on the Canine Art Guild Web site.

Every piece in the show is 5” square to celebrate our 5th Anniversary, and I found I love this small format. I really got on a roll, and produced 5 paintings, but I can only enter 3, so you get to see a couple of extras. Each is for sale for $95 framed (except for the Lab & Vizsla, which are sold).

This beautiful Viszla, Sherman, spends lots of time flopped on my couch, and I could paint him in about 10 different poses, all a jumble of toes and nose. He’s a frequent visitor, and I love him.

This one is not in the show, because I finished it after I had already entered the others. I took a photo of this scene almost 20 years ago one morning in Huntington Beach. I was taking pictures of my brother Dan surfing, but you know me, always sidetracked by dogs. I loved the silhouette against the bright morning sun. These two were having a great time together.

This Chow was photographed at a dog show while his owner brushed out his piles of fur. It’s a long laborious process, and he patiently endured the primping. This painting is also not in the show.

Tally is one of my favorite Labs, and she has been a pet sitting client for many years. As you see she is the happiest dog on earth, and I loved capturing that in this painting. She is actually a Lab/golden mix, bred for Canine Companions for Independence. Her puppy raisers kept her when she didn’t make the cut, and she is a beloved pet. I did another painting featuring a CCI Labrador many years ago for the Labrador Retriever Club National Specialty Show.

And last but certainly not least, this little sheltie is my Bonnie, I call it “My Bonnie Lass.” I adopted her from Sheltie Rescue about 5 years ago. She is enjoying a quilt I bought at an estate sale in Kansas City several years ago while sightseeing with my Aunt Bobbie. I love bight colors, and this quilt and the dog are very special to me.

I hope you enjoy my latest creations. Contact me if you are interesting in purchasing one of these works, or if you would like me to creat a custom painting of your pet. Thank you!

Dogg Gonn-it! Happy Birthday CAG!

Happy Birthday CAG! Our new show Dog Gonn-it! is online at http:www.canineartguild.com. Vote for your favorite! The People's Choice awards go to the top three. One vote per person please! Lots of great art to choose from and most are for sale! The photo represents a sampling of the show by each participating artist but you must visit to see the rest!

Our next show will be in the summer and is titled Here Kitty, Kitty! Artists will be invited to use their imaginations to interpret the theme. It should be another great show!

ENCHANTED Sheltie Puppy

This little merle Sheltie puppy is enchanted with the pink Bleeding Heart that is springing up out of the earth, and I'm enchanted with the puppy. I think it's safe to say that my husband and I love dogs - all dogs. But it is the Sheltie that turns us to mush and makes us putty in their paws. I've had Shelties as companions for over thirty years, longer than I've had my husband! We both love their beautiful natures, clever minds, and gorgeous looks, and to see a Sheltie pup is to want one. But I must add that they are not for everyone. They are bossy, love pranks, and are often overly fond of their own voice. Did I mention the shedding? A Sheltie person has to love angorra everything. But if you love them, these are just minor inconveniences, vastly outweighed by the love and devotion these wonderful dogs give us.
I'm very pleased the way the fluffiness and appeal of this beautiful, uniquely marked puppy came through, and I love the cool, delicate colours of the spring garden. This 6 x 8 matted watercolour painting is available at $150 .

painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Are You My Mother?," 16" square, acrylic on Ampersand Gessobord, portrait of a mixed breed dog, currently not for sale (but will be available for $749 later this summer). Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

You've met Alice before. And, once again, she's painted with a stack of children's books at her side. Can you tell she loves her boys?

Being as Alice is a rescued dog herself, and very much living the happily ever after bit, this painting is slated for my solo exhibition at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary this August. I'll be hanging at least two dozen new paintings and creating Dog-a-Day piece #1000 when I'm out there. Wanna join me? You are more than welcome!

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Two Blue Retrieve a new watercolor and casein by Molly A Poole

"Two Blue Retrieve" 9"x12" a new watercolor/casein painting that I painted for my artist friend Deb Stonebraker of her two labs Reba and Josie. When Deb suggested a painting swap with me, I jumped at the chance. In exchange, Deb will be doing one of her scrumptious, velvety pastel portraits of my Cairn Terrier Cricket for me!

This painting was so much fun to paint. I love the combination of dogs and water....challenging and spontaneous all at the same time.

You can see more of my work at www.granitedog.com
