Watercolor Golden Retriever Pup by Catherine Temple

I have just fallen in love with this Golden Retriever puppy! I photographed him awhile back and he's been the inspiration for at least three paintings. This painting, titled "In His Arms", is the most recent I've done of him (his name is Copper) and the one I love the best! It captures his calm, but intent gaze as he's held protected by loving arms.

The painting was done in watercolor and gouache and is currently on display at the Valley Art Center in Clarkston, Wa. Their show "Going to the Dogs" opens this Friday, April 2nd and runs through May 1st. It features local artists all painting our wonderful canine friends. I've been told the treats being served for the event are dog bone shaped cookies! If you're in the area stop by and enjoy some great art and try out those cookies!!

Thanks for looking!

Borzoi Club of America National Juried Art Show

I decided to enter the Borzoi Club of America Juried Art Show since they had extended the deadline. I had asked a friend of mine to bring her pretty girl over so I could photograph her in the late evening glow. Above are a few of the resulting images as well as a drawing produced from the photos. Hopefully these will be heading to Kentucky in a couple of weeks!

Two other canine images will be heading to Nags Head North Carolina for the Seaside Art Gallery Miniature show.
"Timber Wolf" and "Mystic" Both acrylic, 5 x 5 inches.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Peeking," 12" square, portrait of two Cairn Terriers, done in Golden Open Acrylics on Ampersand Gessobord, $649 unframed, with proceeds earmarked for Col Potter Cairn Terrier Rescue. Or, you can take your chances by waiting to purchase "Peeking" at my summer exhibition ("Happily Ever Afters" at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary), where the painting will be exquisitly framed and available for $749. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

"Peeking" stars puppy mill mamas Nealie and Kipper, the same two sweeties that inspired last week's "Lazing Around." My client gave her blessing for a second painting to benefit animal rescue (THANK YOU!!), and I wasted no time at all getting to work.

I have been feverishly painting for "Happily Ever Afters" and continue to collect faces and stories of rescued companion animals. At this stage I am specifically looking for more unusual types - equines, rabbits, ferrets and other less commonly found pets. Although dogs and kitties are always welcome too.

"Happily Ever Afters" is in invitational solo show I will hang at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in August 2010. The show will highlight rescued animals, with at least two dozen new paintings partnered with stories of triumph and spirit. The exhibition will also include an interactive guest book so that visitors can add their own stories and reactions to the installation.

Please let me know if you are interested in sharing your rescue experiences; all that is necessary is the time involved in sharing your story and collecting non-flash photographs. Your pets - my muses - would join the most excellent company of Nealie and Kipper and a host of other equally dear souls.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Borzoi Pastel Painting by Dawn Secord

Here is a Borzoi painting that I painted off center intentionally. In the reference photo that I had taken, the dog's left side of the face was somewhat in the shadows.

The background was painted dark to light illuminating the face with the focal point being the right eye of the dog (which is on the left side of the painting).

Hope you enjoy viewing it!

Black Labrador Retriever puppy watercolors by Molly A Poole

"Puppy Butt" and "Puppy Legs" are two small watercolors(5x7 and 5x5) I worked on in my studio this afternoon. My brother's new black lab puppy was the inspiration for these quick and vibrant sketches. For me, they were an exercise in quick color choices and to lay down the watercolor as loosely as possible. I am very pleased with the results. Emmy makes a great model don't you think?
As with much of my work, these small paintings are for sale. Single matting and acid-free sleeve ready for framing. Please inquire for pricing at molly@granitedog.com. See more of my work at www.granitedog.com

Finished Commission

I've had this here for a while, since January. Something kept it here. My style changed and the background was just so flat. Since my client ordered a "Yellow Labs" book of my art I decided today to work on the background and change how the entire piece looked. I think I like how the background blends in to the dogs rather than just having straight edges. The viewers eyes fill in the ears and body.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Spring (Mickee)," 9" x 12", acrylic on multimedia artboard, commissioned dog painting. Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

I've created two versions of Mickee, this one drenched in springlike colors, and another tonal painting blanketed in cool blues and lavendars, titled "Winter." You'll get to see "Winter" tomorrow.

But meanwhile my client gets to choose which of the two paintings to hang on her wall. I don't envy her - personally, I like them each equally well. If you take a fancy to "Spring," let me know and I'll get your name on a waiting list.

I especially like this surface - it accepted many layers of paint, survived lots of scrubbing and abuse, didn't buckle or warp, and dried with the loveliest of sheens, highlighting the network of brushmarks. I could get used to this stuff really quickly. Check it out here.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

"Frosty Paws" a portrait of a rescue dog by Molly A Poole

This new "11x14" portrait "Frosty Paws" is a mix of watercolor, casein and acrylic on paper. Zena's faded coat and silver whiskers and happy face made this portrait a joy to paint.
This mixed-media portrait was painted for my friend Joe Maringo who tirelessly rescues injured, unwanted and homeless dogs. Zena is just one of the rescues that has a special place in Joe’s heart. Last year, Joe took her in, blind and deaf, after being discovered chained and neglected by her owners for 17 years. Joe welcomed Zena into his home and gave her comfort, love, a warm place to rest and most importantly her dignity for the 10 short months she was with Joe. She crossed the bridge in late 2009.
Joe writes in his tribute to her…”She was always a joy to be near and greeted everyone with a heartfelt ROO-ROO! She may have been blind and deaf, but she still had an amazing nose that could tell her within seconds if we had visitors, or a fresh bowl of food was set out for her. She was an amazing soul and I will miss her dearly.”
Thanks Joe for all the amazing work you do for the dogs that come into your care! You are one-of-a-kind and so are the dogs you work so hard to rescue.

from The Drawing Muse

I love the proud & stately look of a Great Dane. This fellow was with his owner who wore a t-shirt that read "I'm my dog's personal trainer." I think that should actually read "My dog is my personal trainer" because dogs teach us so much (artwork by Linda Snider Ward; graphite on paper).

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Lazing Around (Kipper and Nealie)," 8" x 10", acrylic on Ampersand Gessobord, commissioned pet portrait of two rescued Cairn Terriers, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

Kipper and Nealie are puppy mill mamas who got their second chance through Col. Potter Cairn Rescue Network and my client. It's hard to imagine these little vivacious souls trapped in stacks of crates, allowed the barest of human contact, with absolutely no regard for their physical or mental health as they were bred repeatedly.

Yet that's what puppy mills do. It's all about delivering as many puppies as possible, without consideration of responsible breeding, the health of the individual, or even perpetuity of a breed. Please, if you are looking to add a dog to your family, find a responsible breeder or adopt through a shelter or rescue. DO NOT buy through pet shops, ever, or consider purchasing through third parties who do not stand behind their dogs for their lifetime.

I'm painting another version of Kipper and Nealie for my solo show at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary this summer. You are invited to join the festivities (and myself) in Kanab at the end of August 2010, including the creation of Dog-a-Day milestone painting #1000.

"Golden Beach" a new watercolor by Molly Poole

This watercolor painting is inspired by our recent trip to Captiva, FL. I love seeing families that can enjoy vacationing with their best friends. This beautiful senior Golden Retriever and her family set up beach-side near us each day when the sun was shining. She hung out enjoying the sea breezes, naps under the umbrella and took an occasional dip in the water. She was the typical Golden that was content to be right with her family at all times. As we sat in our beach chairs, we tried to imagine what our Lab and our Cairn would do if we brought them to the family beach...sand would fly, coolers knocked over and we wouldn't be able to get our dogs to stay with us. They would want to meet everyone!

Today in New Hampshire we have sun and warm temperatures that have me longing for Summer... A perfect day to paint a beachside scene.

Pastel Painting - Irish Setter Puppy by Dawn Secord

This is my dog, Drew. He just turned 2 years old. The reference photo taken for this mini pastel painting was taken the day we brought Drew home. He was 12 weeks old and sitting in my mother's lap.

He is a wonderful dog and brings more laughter into our home on a daily basis than one dog should be capable of. He loves to "hunt" in our yard so it was fitting to put him in an outdoor scene.

Have a great day!

Mini Painting - Irish Setter puppy by Dawn Secord

This painting is titled "Mini Monet" as it is a miniature painting of my dog, Monet. She was about 15 weeks old in this painting.

Time flies - Monet recently turned three years old. If only we could stop the time. It pains me to see my dogs growing older so quickly.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

Detail from "Atira", 9" x 12", painting in process, acrylic on Ampersand Gessobord, from the "Happily Ever Afters" series, will be available for purchase later this summer. Inquiries may always come to me.

Atira comes from a group new to me, Hearts United for Animals, a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. You can learn more about them at their website.

Atira was left tied up outside a home after her family moved out. No food or water or shelter, just the companionship of another dog. She's currently waiting for a new family - I don't doubt it will take long for this sweet girl to get her "Happily Ever After."

I have been waiting a long time to share this next bit of news with you.

I have been invited to hang an exhibition of my work at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. This is the perfect celebration of the long-standing partnership between Painting a Dog a Day and animal welfare.

You are cordially invited to join me in Kanab, Utah at the unveiling of a new series of paintings, "Happily Ever Afters," of which Atira above is a part. These paintings will focus on the variety of faces encountered across the country at shelters and rescues. The artwork will be accompanied with text sharing tidbits of a rescued animals' journey. A guest book (in the form of a sketch-scrapbook) will invite viewers to share their own experiences with rescue.

But wait - it doesn't end there.

In conjunction with the exhitbition, I'll also be painting milestone Dog a Day piece #1000 on site at the sanctuary during the week the show opens (the opening reception is August 26th).

BFAS support created much momentum for the daily paintings when I was starting out. It is especially meaningful to be able to literally bring my artwork to them and spend time with an audience who loves animals even more than I do.

It would be fabulous if you could join us too!

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Morning Light by Jessica Kale

This is the first time I am posting my work on this blog. I only recently became a member about a month ago and am very happy so far. I am currently working various commissions which are either in scratchboard or pastel. I decided to take a break and do something different. The photo reference was a dog named Cooper. I've always been trying to experiment with the absence of light and shadows along with depth. I am very pleased with how this came out. It's scratchboard with a watercolor wash.

After I finish commissions I plan to try a series in this technique. Maybe even get some prints made and sell them to those interested. Any critiques or comments would be great. If you are interested in a commission or are just looking curious check out my website.

"The Klauber Crew, Gypsy," 6" square, commissioned portrait of a mixed breed dog, acrylic on canvasboard, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries (including booking your own pet portrait, from miniature size [4" x 4"] to larger than life) may always come to me.

Gypsy is one of four portraits I am readying for this client. The other three are almost done. I'll sign off on them tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I've been a little distracted by some unscheduled remodelling in the room adjacent to the studio. All is good, but I spent the better half of yesterday and a good chunk of today without power (and no internet!). I didn't realize how much time I spent online or on the computer until it was gone.... yikes! a necessary evil, I suppose.

Precious Bullie Babies

Here are some photos that I will be working from the next few days for the upcoming Canine Art Guild five year anniversary exhibition. I have always meant to do all of my precious bullie bablies and now is finally the time. I have been quite fortunate to have each of these precious bullie baby girls accompany me on my life journey at different times. They are in the order they appear here: Maude, Millie and Grindle. I last lived with Maude, then Millie and first of all, Grindle. I have always loved dogs, however, when I first saw an English Bulldog (just Bulldog, in AKC speak), at age 19, I fell in love. Now not everyone likes them, it seems to be a love or hate kind of thing. They can appear fierce, and when walking down a street with one of them some people coming the other way give a very wide birth or even cross the street! In actuality, they are the usually the sweetest, most lovable dogs you would ever want to know. They sometimes don't like other dogs, but if raised from a pup to be socialized to other dogs, even that is not a problem. I did once read that if not trained to be respectful of people, they can be like "a bowling ball with legs". I raised Millie from a pup, but got Maude and Grindle later in their lives. Only Grindle had a problem with other dogs, but not people.

They all let cats crawl all over them, kind of like the cartoon -- remember that one where the cat "makes bread" on the cartoon bulldog?

They can be quite expensive. I was fortunate to get Grindle from a veterinarian when I was in my early twenties for only $75. I looked hard and long to get Millie and Maude without giving an arm and leg, though I do advocate being aware of breeding, especially since this breed can be susceptile to several health problems.

I love each of them very much and am forever sad to not have them in my life any longer.

For the fifh year anniversary of the Canine Art Guild the exhibit requires that the entry be 5x5 inches and is for sale for an amount with only fives in it. I have cropped these photos to head only compositions for this exhibition. Hope to get all three done, but as the deadline is Monday, the 15th, I will at least have something done. I imagine at some point having all of my dogs this size and then framing them in one frame. May extend this project to cats and then horses.

Here's one of Maude I did in the past. 5x7 colored pencil on Ambersand pastelbord.

Loss of a Beloved Companion

Elin Pendleton writes: Many of you have noticed my sporadic emails in the last few weeks, and for that I sincerely apologize. I'd hoped to share with you the finished polo ponies, but in utter amazement, I cannot FIND the painting! In the chaos of doing a major studio cleanout, I put it "somewhere safe". Have you ever done that?

But today I am very sad for having to put down my companion of eighteen years--Qso, the German Pinscher--shown on the left in one of my paintings with Sparky, and below with Pesto the studio cat.

Pets connect us to our past, living lives of scant more than a decade, and linking us to events and people from earlier times. As they age, we see our own lives (compressed) of youth, prime and then, if we are lucky, and if the animal is as well, we carry them through their old age, giving them the gift of care and a final exit with dignity and sadness.

So today's message is one of communication to all animal lovers out there, those of us who have lost a beloved pet, and to all who share with me the sharp pain of the memory of their last days.

Animals have a prescience and acceptance of death that we humans can only envy. She told me it was time, and her passing was peaceful. I have always said that if we lose a pet, we have a hole in our heart waiting to be filled by an eager newcomer, whose future may be uncertain if we stay within our pain of loss. I am not sure when that achy place will be filled, but fill it will.

So, beloved Qso, I sent you to the Rainbow Bridge today as my last gift to you, and buried you just outside the studio door where you'll always be in my thoughts, and nearby. Safe journey, my companion. My heart is heavy tonight.

Borzoi Art by Dawn Secord

This is a commission I just recently finished. The two Borzoi live in San Diego.

Their home overlooks the ocean so it was fitting to put an ocean in the background.Over 100 photos were taken of the two trying to get the perfect reference photo. Unfortunately and fortunately, the two were so photogenic that it was hard to decide just which photo was the best.

The dogs were so enjoyable to photograph. They galloped around and were just awesome to watch.Hope you enjoy the painting!

If you are interested in commissioning a portrait of your dogs I'd love to talk to you about it. Please feel free to email me at fff@linkline.com or give me a call (866) 393-7111/

Still Going Strong

Oh I'm having fun. The purples and blues are scattered all about with bright yellow greens. SO fun. When it's finished my plan is to have it professionally photographed so I can make Giclees .

Just for the running Golden if for nothing else! Just love how that dog is coming out.
I "see" the final piece so I'm excited to keep painting.

Stippling Technique

This technique of Stippling is one I have not done in a long while but absolutely love. It's time consuming but totally takes me in and focuses me. Stippling is ink, one dot at a time. The closer the dots become. the darlker the area. Pointillism, being similar except it is done with color. Seurat was famous for his Pointillism paintings.
