The Belgian Sheepdogs are so intelligent and beautiful. They served faithfully in war times as guard dogs and as Red Cross dogs, and now they excel at Agility. I love painting them, but a black dog, like this Groenendael type can be a challenge. I try to keep in mind the highlights, shadows, and texture of hair as well as the conformation and expression of the dog while I'm working, and this helps to sort out the subtle shifts of light and shadow in a black coat.
