Memorial Portrait, 'Kiwi'

This is a Memorial portrait I just completed of 'Kiwi', a greyhound belonging to the founder of Galgo Rescue International Network (G.R.I.N.) which does wonderful work helping the severely maltreated Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds) of Spain. The painting is an oil on canvas on panel, and measures 8"x6". I had donated a custom portrait to a Galgo Rescue auction, and this is what resulted. Initially, I had a diffucult time with the background as it looked as if Kiwi was floating, so I decided to add grass which made things look more believable. Also added are 'Forget Me Nots' which lend a bit of poignancy to the piece.

PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI

I've been keeping this portrait quiet for several months, but now I can show it. Rhys the Corgi was done earlier this year and was to be a surprise gift for an Autumn birthday, so I had to be patient about showing him.I always find graphite to be an enjoyable challenge. Translating all the colour variations into black and white, and putting in the highlights, mid-tones, and shadows is time consuming, tricky work (at least, for me it is) and I was very pleased with the way Rhys turned out. Happily, so was my client!

Sun Spots - Carol Chretien

This is a 10x10 oil painting recently finished that will benefit WILLING HEARTS DALMATIAN RESCUE one of the Art Helping Animals supported rescues. My own Lizzie was my inspiration for the piece. It is always amazing to me how many different looks she has for me to choose from when I am looking for that inspiration. I paint for 3 Dalmatian rescues on a regular basis to help with fundraising they are located in CA, FL, and Willing Hearts which is a regional rescue for PA, MD, NJ. The sale is pending for this painting.

OK, Dogs Chase Chickens, right?

It's almost finished, and I wanted to share it with you, so that you'll have a comparison from the one two days ago on my blog. The canvas is completely covered now, and all that remains to be done is to make each of the larger shapes in the composition "stand on its own" in visual interest. If I left those passages Plain Jane, I'd not be happy with it--would you say, "boring"? The variations on those areas may be subtle, but I always think they are necessary to have a canvas that really sends a message of a great work.

I'm sitting in the studio, hunkered down for one of those Santana wind conditions outside--dry, hot, windy weather--the nemesis of Southern California in the fall. But I've cleared the perimeter of our land, and Vincent van Goat and his friend Heather have taken down a lot of the overgrowth outside our fences. Preparation is the key when faced with any calamity, and I run through my mind the steps I'd take if I needed to evacuate--animals, crates, etc.

There are six people in the November workshop so it is a GO (not that there was any doubt!). Got Color? How about a Color Boot Camp? Direct link below.

Speaking of animals, when the hot weather comes on, Seiko (the watch) dog comes into the studio to keep cool. Here she is on the other side of my taboret snoozing away--snoring to the beat of "Beast of Burden" by the Stones. That's 105 pounds of Tibetan Mastiff. We ask her where she wants to go. Good dog.

Sophie, Love at First Sight

Sophie is a Terrier/Corgi mix and a very sweet dog. She belongs to my Mother who took her from a friend who could no longer take care of her. Her portrait will be a part of the online exhibit, "Helping Paws, 2009" through the Canine Art Guild, October 1, 2009 through January, 2010. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibit benefit a shelter of each artists' choosing. I have chosen the Humane Society of Delaware County. The people at the shelter really care about the animals and this is a good way for me to support them and the efforts they make to re-home so many animals.

Please consider the adoption option.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

Siblings, 12" x 14", acrylic on gallery stretched linen, depicting a litter of pit bull puppies, $799. Proceeds from the sale of this painting will be donated to my shelter, the Oakland Pet Adoption Center. Inquiries may come to me.

I was so excited about the outcome of this painting that I could not wait to share it with you. The light, the relaxed poses, the color, and that dark brindled pup in the back - I just smile as my eye roves over this one.

This painting will go to the Canine Art Guild's Helping Paws exhibition. I'll share the details of that show with you once it is published online.

And it's headed to a host of shows after that.

A special thanks (again) to Lisa Fishler for sharing the inspirational photo.

painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Peekaboo (Toby, Yorkshire Terror)," 4" x 6", Yorkshire Terrier portrait in acrylic on canvasboard, $199 to the first taker. Inquiries may come to me.

There is something about a lifesize portrait that beckons the viewer, inviting their participation and demanding interaction. When planning the scale of your artwork (or choosing the size of a photographic enlargement) think about how the subject matter might be transformed if created lifesize (or larger).

I'll be adding new paintings for sale to my etsy store later tonight. Repeat offenders, err, collectors, get 10% off their purchases - just put "REPEAT" in the memo field during your checkout process, and I'll adjust your total accordingly.

Thanks, as always, for looking at - and sharing - my artwork with your friends and family.

Napping in my Dog Bed

I loved creating this pastel for the family. Actually it is a gift for the mother's birthday of their adored family dog who passed suddenly last May. In the only one good photo they had, Breezy is partially asleep. I opted to open his eyes and let him peak out at the viewers with his "Are you thinking about going somewhere?" look. The daughter is thrilled...I'll bet Mom will be too :-)

Dreamer the Irish Setter by Dawn Secord

This is Dreamer. Here is his story as told by his human mom:

Last year we had a litter in which 5 of the pups were diagnosed with Parvo. One of these pups was in the hospital for 2 weeks. It was touch and go, with the vet and the techs not knowing if he would live or die. During his stay, they became quite attached to little "Tan Boy". He did eventually get well and came home from the hospital. There were 2 others that had the parvo pretty bad, but this one was, by far, the worst. When he came home, he was so skinny and weak. It was a real effort for him to walk, let alone play. I let him and his 2 other weak brothers out in the yard alone to move freely for a few minutes each evening. This boy came up to me while I was sitting in my chair, sat down and looked up at me with the saddest eyes. It had been determined that he was a pet and not show quality before he got sick. In that look, he seemed to be telling me that he was home, and he never wanted to leave again. How pathetic his look. I began to cry and took him in my arms and told him that he would never leave. He was ours forever. The litter theme was mountain. His name - Belvedere's Climb Every Mountain. He had climbed his mountain! His call name is Dreamer. Now, of course, when he was out in that yard, I had the camera. I took 2 pictures of that sad boy, with his pitiful look. I have cherished those photos since. He is not small or skinny anymore. He is a big, hyper, happy boy, who will knock you over if he jumps on you. He wants to please and will instantly sit or down on command, but he cannot keep his feet still for 2 seconds. He is great in the house, but wants to play fetch constantly. I am so glad that I made our home his home. Well, I sent the 2 photos to Dawn Secord. I wanted a portrait of this boy! Tonight, she surprised me by sending me a photo of the finished portrait. I can only tell you that when I opened the tears came into my eyes as I remembered the day he begged me to keep him. Dawn has done it again! She captured the whole instant in her superb work! Thank you, Dawn.

Fun is being with an Irish Setter Terry Z

CORN DOG Yellow Labrador

In the Fall, I often see a Yellow Labrador contentedly patrolling a corn field near here. He blends into the scene so well - the gold shaded yellow dog with his handsome dark brown points around eyes, nose, and mouth, against the dark earth and yellow/gold corn stalks and stubble.
Crows are ever present at this time of year, but the dog minds his own business if the crows are willing to do the same.
I enjoy these friendly big dogs who always seem ready for a cuddle. Big, solid, and reliable, the Labrador Retriever is just an all round great dog.
CORN DOG is an 8 x 10 watercolour on Arches Hot Press paper.

Irish Setters by Dawn Secord

Lucy and Hogan's portrait has been in the making for some time. The first time they were photographed was in Arizona - April 2008. It was very hot and windy at that time and we all decided to take more photos at a later date.

We took pictures of Lucy again in October 2008 in Pleasanton California. There were some truly wonderful photos. Lucy is a gorgeous girl so it would have been nearly impossible not to get a good photo. She was born to be a cover girl!

Recently Hogan's owners had taken some great shots of him in an outside park setting. He was sitting on a bench just giving the camera the "rollicking" look of an Irish Setter. It was "that" look that his owner was trying to capture. Hopefully this painting will give you a look into the wonderful world of Hogan and a glimpse of the beauty of Lucy.

My only concern with this painting has been sneaking it out of my house - and away from my husband who has laid claim to it and does not want me to ship it off to its rightful owners!
My website features a number of finished works and prints - both limited and open editions for sale. Please go take a peek! http://www.dawnsecord.com/

"Indigo Skye"

I've always enjoyed painting my own dogs in between commissions, because it allows me to try out different approaches or play with my composition and not be worried about pleasing the client. This is Skye, my English Shepherd...who is a huge help here on our farm. When she's not herding the goats or keeping the chickens out of the gardens, she's my loyal shadow and a unsurpassed furry foot warmer on a cold winter's night! I took a photo of her while she was gopher hunting and knew immediately that I wanted to paint it. The cropped photo added to the intensity of her expression and it was late afternoon so I had plenty of that lovely golden light to play with. You can see more of my work at www.judebatesart.com

Cleopatra - JRT by Carol Chretien

Nothing feels better than when you complete those pieces you have promised to a rescue.
This is the winner's new painting of her JRT "Cleopatra" ... she won the prize, my donation to help with a fundraiser at the Russell Rescue Trials in Hebron CT, this past June 20th. What a cutie this little dog is.
I usually give the gift of a print but this time I agreed to do a custom painting and now I am glad as I enjoyed painting this little girl so much. Their rescue site info is http://www.russellrescue.com/index.php4 and they have regional chapters around the country.
thanks for looking!
