Elin Pendleton Oil Paints one of the Terriers - Lesson Blog

I'm starting this 9 x 12 oil of one of the two Teddy Roosevelt Terriers today, as I am enjoying the "recuperation" from my birthday a few days ago... turning "of an age" can be solemn, or it can be a bit crazy. I took the latter path...no surprise.

So today, to do penance if I were so inclined to think like that, I'm going to the dogs! Inspiration for this painting came literally "right under my feet". In the leg space under my roll top desk (where I sit typing this) there's a donut dog bed and I glanced down and saw Onslow in a familiar sleeping position. So I took out my camera and lights, and took several images, adjusting the lighting and shooting without a flash. The source material is below. Total comfort!

The linen canvas was scumbled with an under layer of ultramarine blue, burnt umber and yellow ochre, setting the tone for the colors to come. This scheme will be with the Color System, and I'll keep the complimentary dominance of blue/orange and yellow/purple to make it work.

You can see I don't spend a lot of time drawing, although for this unusual pose I did do a sketch in my sketchbook to lock down the location of all those airborne paws. The painting is coming along nicely now.

There may be one or more spaces in the Sebastopol Color Boot Camp in August--less than two weeks before I head up north of San Francisco to both give a painting demonstration in Ukiah, and then the workshop and demonstration in Sebastopol. Please let me know if you'd like a dose of "Yellin' by Elin" in this Color Boot Camp workshop. Please contact me using the email link below, and I'll forward your interest to the person in charge. I hope to meet some of you there!

I'm back...again!

So sorry I have been so quiet lately. Doing another battle with Lyme and erlichiosis.. My Border Collie has it, too. So much for tick preventives working well. I started an herbal protocol with the doxy this time and am seeing a huge difference. Thanks for all of the well wishes!

My art has been selling well despite my break from studio business and I would like to thank all of my new collectors for all of the wonderful comments on my art. Yesterday I delivered A Good Scratch to it's new home here in Pawling. This little 8 x 10 will be on the cover of The Chronicle of the Horse Magazine. Anyway, I dropped it off at a gorgeous horse farm and got a tour of the farm and met all of equine residents. The owners did such a beautiful job on the facility. A delightful afternoon. It iis always a pleasure when my art is appreciated by fellow horse and dog people!
My HeArtdogs Series is back in business and I have few more breeds completed. I sure missed painting!
I have listed Doxie in Blue and Viszla to my Etsy store. Cost foe each is $25 + $4.85 Priority Mail Shipping.

Keep an eye out for a lot more affordable small works! Let me know if you would like to see your breed and I always welcome good clear reference photos of dogs and horse for future paintings!

If you are in the area (Pawling, NY) be sure to stop into the Bakla Java Cafe on E Main for a nice cup of joe and to see some of my work! Enjoy!

Not only does this cute pug have his own yacht...he also has people to sail it for him! This 12 x 12 " casein was commissioned by a collector of my work from New York, and it is to be given to Charlie's people. Yes , Charlie....THE PUG......has 'PEOPLE'! I should have people!

What I have is animals....
My Cob Cottage crew are napping on the deck.....soaking up sun before thunderstorms storm through. Summer has finally arrived in Morrill, Maine!

painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Lookin' for Eoin (Buddy as a Pup)," 6" x 12", acrylic mixed breed puppy portrait, not available for purchase.
I'm working on paintings that are gifts and therefore cannot be shared for fear of ruining the surprise. Well, Buddy is one of them, but I'm fairly certain the recipient, my 5 year old nephew, doesn't follow my blog, so I'm safe. Unless another Kelly ruins the surprise, which would mean no more beers at my house, so I'm confidant the secret's safe for a little longer.....
This is Buddy, a newly rescued Border Collie mix. He is a sweet puppy, already very attached to his boys, Eoin, Connor and Gavin. What great times these 4 will have growing up together! Poor Sarah (my sister-in-law) - does she really know what's in store?
Just a reminder - holiday commissions are almost entirely booked. Please let me know if you are considering commissioning a pet portrait as a gift so that I can get you on the calendar before it is too late!
Next week will bring the newest painting in the canines & cars series, a grouping I've named "Sunday Drivers." I'm always looking for inspirations and stories - you may send your materials to me. I'll acknowledge receipt of everything. And thanks in advance for sharing!!
And thanks, too, for sharing my artwork.
Have a great weekend, Kim Santini
PS Thank you to everyone for my birthday wishes and your donations to A Place to Bark. I was overwhelmed with your response and am completely convinced that the Painting a Dog a Day community is the best!

Window Seat - Carol Chretien

"WE'LL TAKE THE WINDOW SEAT"
12x12
oil on canvas
CAROL CHRETIEN
This is my newest painting for National Airedale Rescue. Inspired by a pair of Dales from their photo library I thought a nice Nocturne scene with lots of interior color and pattern. Lots of fun to paint. 20% will go to the NARA when sold. What makes the painting fun for me is the fashioning of the surroundings and freedom to play with color and textures. The obvious connection of companionship between the dogs is relaxed and happy. Colorful synergy in this one. carolchretien@aol.com to contact me.

A gorgeous chap: he was great subject to draw and lent himself perfectly in explaining how to draw black dogs.
Interested in your own special commission, do not hesitate to contact me either through my blog, webiste www.sheonahamiltongrant.com or email info[at]sheonahamiltongrant.com, it will be my pleasure to answer all of your queries.

Painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Pei Play," 10" x 20", portrait of two Shar-peis, acrylic on canvasboard, $629. (In the interest of full disclosure, this painting actually took me 2 days to complete, not the requisite Painting a Dog a Day's one day.) Inquiries may come to me.
The above painting is Jay with his sister Raisin. They didn't start life out together. Raisin, being the oldest & wisest, sagely allowed Jay to join the family. Jay was "discovered" (err, rescued) off Craig's list.
I've painted their portraits previously and separately (Raisin was one of the first Dog a Days, and Jay, or "Chocolate Pei," 8" square, pictured below, was done just a few weeks back but I hadn't had a chance to share him yet), but couldn't resist painting this piece of them together.

"Pei Play" epitomizes sheer joy, resilience and vitality. The perfect combination for this October's 2nd annual "Helping Paws" exhibition hosted by the Canine Art Guild. Helping Paws is a unique art show where the participating artists choose a rescue or shelter to partner with, and the sale of their artwork supports that particular group. There also will be People's Choice awards in the form of cash donations made to the partner animal rescue/shelter. "Pei Play" will be one of my entries for this particular show.
Now I'm off to spend a little time on myself. Can't decide if I should curl up with a good read or make progress on my latest knitting project, a laptop sleeve for my new powerbook. Either way, I'll also have a glass of wine and a warm gooey brownie.
Thanks as always for looking at and sharing my artwork.

Jack Russells Wanta Have Fun

Another gray day. Seems that is what I am bemoaning a lot these days.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record.
Above is a fun little casein on board, 5 x 7”, of a young JRT having fun. Jacks are always ready for fun! I am titling it “Leapin’ Lizards”. It will be put up on my website too. The pup who inspired this painting belongs to a new friend I have made on Facebook. Thanks, Vicki!!

Now I have to make some time for some commissions that need to get finished and in between those I will be working on new work. While my family series got put on a back burner, that whole subject matter is begging to be done…and so I have to follow my muse.

The other night I spent a fair amount of time looking for rentals in Italy. It is a dream of mine [and Les’ too] to go back to Italy and spend some time there. [Our horses and dogs and cat don’t think it is such a good idea…!] I looked over the area where Les and I used to live in Umbria and Tuscany. It has grown up so much since we were there…. villages are now cities. Cobbled stoned streets are now highways. Maybe we should stay where we are and just remember it like it was? Oh, but wouldn’t it be great to be painting in Italy again???

Chesapeake Bay Retrievers in Pencil

This pencil portrait featuring four Chessies is my latest commission. This is one of my favorite pieces because it depicts my favorite dog breed so I guess I am a little partial! I really did enjoy doing it though and it was challenging to try to get the coat patterns correct since Chessie coats go every which direction. The other challenge was trying to depict three different coat colors in black and white. Two of the dogs are a reddish color called sedge, the front one is a light deadgrass and the dog on the right is a dark brown. I did a work in progress report on this drawing that you can follow on my personal blog. Just click here to check it out.

Thanks for looking!

Whippets in fall

I had a whole CD of images that my old computer couldn't read and I thought they were lost forever. Luckily I tried the disc in the new computer and it worked fine. Among the newly rediscovered images were the ones from the photo shoot I did for a whippet breeder a couple of years back. I liked the way the dogs blended with the background colours of the landscape that they were whipping through. I always enjoy getting a chance to work with sighthounds and their elegant lines.

Sleeping Lab Puppy

Here's my newest mini painting--a 3 1/2"x 2 1/2" oil on canvas affixed to a board. He's on his way to the east coast! This surface is really great to work on---the canvas is a very small weave and it isn't slick so the paint actually is a pleasure to apply. This painting took one evening to complete.
