painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Riding Shotgun (Border Terriers)," 4" x 5", dog painting in acrylic on canvasboard, framed in custom gold carved molding, $284. Inquiries may come to me.

Remember last week's painting "Backseat Drivers"? It was headed to an exhibition this week and not for sale. Well a new collector asked "please?" enough times that I opted to sell the piece to her and create a different one for the show (which focuses on our love of the automobile, hence the recurring car theme).

Just to eliminate any potential groveling, "Riding Shotgun" is on the market right away. If I still have it by Thursday morning, it'll go to the show. If it sells, well then I've got another dog and car piece on the easel as a backup.

Never a dull moment around these parts!
Thanks so much for sharing my artwork with your friends and family, and for saying "please."
Kim Santini

Tucker

Tucker belonged to a friend of mine and was her constant companion for many years. A few weeks after photos were taken for this picture she lost him suddenly to cancer. I couldn't believe it, he was so full of life that day, and then just gone.
This original 5x7 watercolor is not for sale, but I am offering 5x7 giclees for $10 plus $5 S&H. 20% of all proceeds will be donated to the SPCA of Southwest MI. Please email me at lojomjnc@charter.net.

She's A Jersey Girl - Carol Chretien

Tori Jem was a greyhound in need of adoption when I saw her image on the Greyhound Friends of New Jersey site and fell in love with her eyes. Having a rescue friend who had recently adopted a Grey from them prompted me to want to help out their rescue with a donation from my art. So many beautiful dogs waiting for homes! Doing the painting and telling her story would help to get her rescue a little more attention. In her case, she didn't need much help. Her foster family fell in love with her.
In the time it took to get the painting designed and using Tori Jem and the Jersey shore for my inspiration, she was adopted and is living in a happy home with another Greyhound companion.
The painting sold this week to help the rescue.
These wonderful dogs make the best adopted additions to a family. It was my pleasure to get to paint this breed again.

Doodling, by Terry Albert

Presenting Rylee, a golden-doodle. Her owner ordered this painting as a Father's Day gift for her husband. Rylee is quite a character, only a year old and a very busy girl. She is so energetic that when she walks next to me, I carry a metal dog dish so she won't crash into me. She jumps up and bongs her head on the bottom of the bowl, and just keeps on jumping happily along at my side!

I am a pet sitter as well as an artist, and Rylee was staying with me this week. It was nice to have my model here when I had questions about the reference photo. For example, I checked to see what color the skin is around her eyes, brown or black. If I made that area the color of her coat, her eyes would look way too small, and it wouldn't be accurate anyway. She is curled up under my drawing board right now, sleeping off a big day of playing with two collies and a Lab.

Her coat is not white, it is a creamy color-- like a light colored golden retriever or Lab would have. So it was fun to add the lavender shadows (the complement of yellow) to make her color richer. To give it depth, I started with a wash of burnt sienna under the entire dog, and then built up layers of acrylic paint in golds creams and lavender with some gray and brown shadows.

This painting is an 8" x 10" and is sold. It is done in acrylic and colored pencil. Visit my web site to see more of my artwork at http://www.terryalbert.com. I am available for a custom commissioned painting of your dog or other pet!

The photo shown here is Rylee (with very muddy paws!) relaxing in the back yard with Chester, another energetic young dog.

Mini Set

This week, as I mentioned on Twitter, I decided to do a set of miniature paintings - a Pug, a Cavalier, and a cat, to take to the Gallery, if they haven't sold before I get there. (I can always do more!) These are all 2.5 by 3.5 inches, and painted in the round in Acrylics. By "Painted In The Round, I mean that the sides and back of these tiny paintings are part of the painting. They will be exhibited on small easels painted gold.On Monday, I all but finished the Pug, putting the final details on it on Tuesday. This is the second in my "Brown Eyes" series of miniature Pug Paintings. The first one is sold.Wednesday, I drew the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Cat. Yesterday, I finished them both. These tiny things are fun to do, and while miniature, I still aim to get the details correct and a good expression on the little faces.

New Pug Painting & Our Iggy

I just finished up this little 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" Pug painting. It's an oil on canvas, and I was pleased with the ease in which it progressed. I'm starting to get bolder and having more fun with color---there are a lot of gentle lavenders, blues and greens in the Pug's coat. The vibrant greens used for the background were really fun to apply.

Also for your amusement is a pic of our Italian Greyhound, Meadow resting.

painting a Dog a Day by Kimberly Kelly Santini

This one's an oldie but a goodie. "Great Expectations," from May 25th, 2007 (the first year of Painting a Dog a Day), painting 6" x 6" finished to a perfect 12" square, depicting a Pomeranian dog, exquisitely framed, $349. Inquiries may come to me.

This little gem has made her rounds to a number of juried exhibitions, winning hearts and awards across the state of Michigan. She's now back in the studio and looking for a new home - will it be yours?

I spent today finishing up another painting for the Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation (am awaiting approval on the image before I share). I also continued work on a new exhibition piece for an art show devoted to automobiles - of course my entries revolve around dogs and their love of car rides.

Tomorrow will be spent finalizing my newest painting (working title "Backseat Drivers") and editing the studio newsletter, which should have been completed before school let out. Just not enough hours in the day!

But tonite it's an early (for summertime) turn in. Have a new book to curl up with and a fresh box of wheat thins - not the Mission to Marzipan Ben & Jerry's that I really want, but a compromise.

Thanks as always for looking at and sharing my paintings.
See you tomorrow,
Kim

"I'm Available...Call Me" - Carol Chretien

Homeless dog in the care of OLD DOG HAVEN senior dog hospice and rescue. "Zeke" was given up so the family could get a puppy. He is 12 and has been in foster care until he can have a "forever family" and that gets tough when you are an old timer. He is a good dog and healthy...just older. His only "Special needs" is natural tears eye ointment daily. Not much to ask.
If you live near Arlington, WA you might want to find out about adoption!

This painting is alla prima oil on canvas 10 x 10 gallery wrapped canvas. SOLD. The donation went to Old Dog Haven to support their work.

Grin!

I got a shot of this American Staffordshire terrier at a flyball practice a few weeks ago. The lighting was poor and this shot wasn't as crisply focussed as I would like, but with a little help from Photoshop and some creative cropping, I have made it into an image that gives me a smile.

Little Dipper by Carol Chretien

The Little Dipper
12x12
oil
This is a rescue puppy formerly known as "Spike" by the family who turned him in to a Humane shelter because he was hyper and hard to train.
After an hour in his foster home he was found to be deaf, had demodex mange that was cleared in a month and it was later determined that he has a genetic defect with his teeth that will cause them to fall out later in his life.
However the GREAT NEWS is...His new name is Cole Edward, he has been adopted by a family that will love him forever in a home with other Dals. He is very smart and learning handsignals, loves people, kids and other dogs. He is so happy!
His foster mom sent me a pic with permission to use as my inspiration for this painting. He has beautiful blue eyes and is just a gorgeous boy. I am telling his story because even deaf puppies can have a really great life with the right family. I will be getting pics of him from his new family who are great supporters of Dalmatian Rescue and can't wait to see him grow into a handsome Dalmatian.

From the Painting a Dog a Day Project by Kimberly Kelly Santini

"Ajax's Ball," 6" x 8", commissioned dog portrait starring a white Boxer, acrylic on canvasboard, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries may come to me.

With Ajax's Ball, I completed the grouping of Boxer portraits. I've included another image below, so that you can get a sense of how they all work together (and see my paint splattered studio floor....).
I was careful to use a variety of canvas sizes, but didn't make the paintings all matchey-matchey. They are linked because of their subject matter and style, and will be further enhanced with coordinating frames and additional photographs of the dogs. It will be a truly stunning collection, and a great tribute to the heart and character of these three rescued dogs.

I welcome the opportunity to discuss your animals and put together a special painting or two for your home. You can always contact me with your ideas.

Thanks again for sharing my paintings!
Have a great weekend, Kim

Golden Retriever Study from Painting a Dog a Day

"Golden Retriever Study," 4" x 5", acrylic on canvasboard, mounted in a custom gold carved frame, $249. I could also take this painting out of the frame and sell it naked for $184. Inquiries may come to me.

This is an older painting, from before the Dog-a-Days started. I kept him for myself to enjoy for a bit (I was - and continue to be - partial to all the colors of the rainbow in this face), then splurged on a great frame and shared him through various exhibitions and events. I'm ready to let him go now, but only to a good home. Is it yours?

The artwork created at the Belmont pARTy was published online early this morning - you can view the pieces at the Virtual pARTy blog. There's also information on how you can participate the next time around.

Thanks as always for sharing my paintings with your friends and family,
See you tomorrow,
Kim Santini

Border Collie Painting

Hitting the studio with gusto and loving it! Today's daily painting is a Border Collie. What About Me? is the title of this one. It depicts my most favorite breed of dog. This one really, really wants to come out to play but can't reach the latch! :) This one is a small 5 x7, acrylic on canvas panel. As always can pop into a standard size stock frame. This little gem is super affordable and can be yours for $35 and includes Priority Mail shipping! Purchase What About Me?

A Small Gem Of A Jack Russell

On my trip to Kentucky I met two new Jack Russell's and this is my first painting of one little lady who was a JRT to the core. She entertained us as she ran around her yard...a perfect lady!
This is a small [5 x 7"] casein on board. It will be available on my website in the Small Works Collection.

My studio is a mess...I am finding it hard to find my paint! Tomorrow calls for a clean up, I am sure! meanwhile, our Addie seems to be doing so much better. She is being her usual bossy Corgi self and walks around the house like a queen in her E-collar. Her cohort in crime is fascinated with Addie's new collar. She is acting like she wants one too. That could be arranged!!

Oil painting of an American Eskimo

This lovely fellow is Tristan, an American Eskimo. He is of the small variety weighing in at about 16 lbs. He was adopted about 9 years ago from American Eskimo rescue. He has a super personality and you wouldn't know from looking at him that he is at least 10 years old. I started this painting last weekend at my art booth at the dog show in Charlottesville, VA. I just took along my paints and french easel and set up outside my tent. I had lots of onlookers and got quite a bit done over the two days. However I had to finish it up in my studio this week. This piece will be exhibited in a show this August to benefit the local animal rescue here in Sanford, NC. It is for sale, inquiries to the artist at canineart@windstream.net Yvonne Sovereign
