Pogo, again

I didn't really like the last image I did of our dog, Pogo, and I think this one does her much more justice. We adopted her from Kalamazoo Animal Rescue where many other fine pets can be had. I was vain enough to want a "good looking dog" and Pogo fits the bill.
This original watercolor is not for sale, but I am offering 5x7 ) giclees for $10 plus $5 S&H. 20% of all proceeds will be donated to Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. Please email me at Lojomjnc@charter.net if you would like one.

Calypso

Calypso, a handsome black and white husky has already found a home but he was so strikingly good looking and since I have a soft spot for the northern breeds, I just had to paint his portrait. Dogs just as handsome as Calypso can be found at SPCA of Southwest MI so go take a look.
This original 5x7 matted (8x10) watercolor is available for $60 plus $5 S&H to the first emailer to lojomjnc@charter.net.

Cody, Blue Merle Sheltie

From the Painting a Dog a Day project, "Cody," 8" square, commissioned pet portrait of a blue merle sheltie, private collection. As always, inquiries, including how you can get your own Dog-a-Day painting, may come to me.

I painted today in a deep fog, I suspect complicated by the lethal combination of cold medicine and a hearty mashed potato overdose. Cody, with his great markings, was the perfect antidote.

I'm ready for a serious nap right now.

But I'll be back tomorrow, with a new painting.
Thanks as always for sharing these portraits and following along!

Frozen Whiskers, Vizsla Portrait

From the Painting a Dog a Day project, "Frozen Whiskers I (Vizsla),"5" x 7", dog portrait in acrylic on canvasboard, $249. Proceeds from the sale of this painting will go to the Vizsla Welfare Foundation. Inquiries may come to me at ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com .

Outside the studio, the wind has been whipping about while the snow fell sideways. I think that might have influenced today's choice of subject.

This painting was inspired by a friend's photo of her beautiful Vizsla Windy.  You can see more of Windy and her extended family (many of whom I've painted before) here.

Thanks, as always, for looking at my paintings!

Pogo

A hard thing to do is to paint your own dog! We adopted Pogo from Kalamazoo Animal Rescue a couple of years ago and this is the first time I have painted her. She was about 4 when we got her and after a day or two of anxiety in the new place with cats and horses she settled right in and has been a wonderful wonderful dog. Either because of her breed and/or previous training she always comes when called and I don't ask for much more in a dog. Adopting an adult dog was a great idea, too. She was already house trained.
Pogo's love in life is to chase balls, and bring them back for more. She doesn't ask for much more in an owner, so we are happy together.
This watercolor is not for sale but please stay tuned for more ForLeggedCreatures paintings of other shelter dogs and cats.

"Hannah" Irish Setter by Dawn Secord

This Irish Setter is "Hannah" Ch. Winfree's Love Of My Heart. The painting was done from a professional photograph - with permission of course.

In April of 2007 I had taken photos of Hannah while attending the Irish Setter Club of America National Specialty in Ocala, Florida. Hannah's owner knew what photo she wanted me to use for the pose - but wanted me to meet Hannah in person and take photos of her for additional reference material.Hannah is one of those special dogs that can look right into your heart. The above pose is so precious - the tilt of her head and the softness of her eyes tells you what a priceless princess she is!

Have a great day!

Yellow Lab in Acrylic

This is the newest edition to my Sporting Dog series featuring a very handsome Yellow Lab. I have painted this piece in acrylic which is a new medium for me and one that I have had on my list of mediums to learn for quite some time. I have tried acrylics in the past and for some unknown reason have never produced a painting that I was completely happy with even though acrylics are supposed to be so wonderful and forgiving. I usually ended up trashing them. This time I made up my mind that I was going to really give it a good try and did a lot of studying up on technique and handling. I tried not to hurry through the process and when I encountered problems I took a break, but I never gave up and kept working through it. I learned an awful lot with this painting and am (Finally!!!) pretty satisfied with the results.

This piece is an 11 x 14 painted on hardboard and is for sale. I have not set a price yet, but inquiries may come to my email kindredspirits@clearwire.net. Note cards, small prints and ACEOs will also be available.

Thanks for looking!

Collie Love

February brings a silver-lace look to the snow and you can feel the air gradually take on the memory of warmth. You begin to get a faint hope that Spring is out there somewhere. Shining in the middle of the month is Valentine's Day, and here at Sheltie Hollow, that means a special dinner, roses, and luscious Swiss Chocolates. But love is not the exclusive domain of humans. Our dogs and cat exhibit real affection for us and towards each other. Many years ago, we had a Tricolour Collie who gently adored children. When our nephew would come to visit, it was clear that he and Daisy shared a special fascination with each other. My 8 x 10 inch watercolour painting "Collie Love" is a warm memory of those long ago days when boy and dog would go off into a shady corner to be together and enjoy each other's company.

Cave , a watercolor illustration

Since joining the Society of Children's book writers and illustrators, I was invited to be a participating member of the Watercolor Wednesdays Blog for Children Book illustrators. They have weekly and monthly painting challenges. They have a word for each week and we the illustrators have to come up with a creative illustration to showcase that word. This weeks word was 'Cave'.
All I could think of at the moment was my dogs crate. I always tell him to get into his cave when I put him and the kids to bed. I used my dog as a model, but I changed his color for more interest. I also changed the floor, as the real floor is a rug. You can check out this post and posts of others on that blog, by following the link above.

German Shorthaired Pointer Hunt Test

I spent a very cold day last month at a Hunt Test photographing the various dogs there who are all working on different legs of their Test. "Courtney" and "Seth "are both AKC champions They are German Shorthaired Pointers working to achieve their certifications.
The owners selected the poses that they wanted from the photos that I had taken and I created these 14 x 18 oils. I purposefully chose images of them looking at each other since I had visited the home and knew where the portraits were going to be displayed. You don't want one looking into the wall!
The key to an eye popping oil are the highlights as well as letting the background fade away into the distance! I kept the colors subdued to bring out the deep liver color of the breed and also to emphasize the January feel of this Southern Pines, NC sport!

Doggles, Terrier Mix

"Doggles," from the Painting a Dog a Day project (www.paintingadogaday.com),  4" x 8", mixed breed terrier portrait, acrylic on canvasboard, $249 to the first one raising their hand. Inquiries may always come to me via email.

I've had this photo in my to-paint pile for about 2 years now. Originally I had wanted to paint her nice and big, but ultimately changed my mind. I've learned to appreciate the value of an intimately sized painting. Seems like the dog's joy and the sunshine grows more potent when compacted.

German Shepherd Dog by Dawn Secord

This painting is the first in my puppy series being specifically created for my exhibit in May at the Pinnell Gallery - Art of the Dog.

I was at a dog show last year and a lady walked past our motor home with this three month old German Shepherd puppy. His movement was spectacular. Love to watch the Shepherds! Once my eyes stopped staring - my mind said - photograph this puppy. So, I ran after the lady, explained I was an artist and asked for permission to photograph her puppy. She was very kind and had a litter mate that she also brought out so we could photograph the puppies playing.

This painting is not yet titled but will be for sale through the gallery. If you are interested in purchasing the painting before the show - please contact me at my email fff@linkline.com or my toll free studio number is 866-393-7111.

Reflections on a Winter Afternoon

On cold winter afternoons like today, most of our Shelties love to curl up somewhere cozy and snooze. This little girl however, prefers to keep an eye on things. Her favourite spot on a late winter afternoon is on the back of a couch where she can catch the last rays of the setting sun. I was fascinated by the way the sun warms her coat and by the far away look in her eyes. What does she think about? I was also intrigued by how to solve the problem of painting her reflection in the window, so naturally, I just had to paint this.I chose acrylic for this painting because of the possibilities of layering light over dark. "Reflections On A Winter Afteroon" was every bit as challenging as I thought it would be, and every bit as enjoyable to paint. I am delighted that this painting is now being enjoyed in a home where Shelties reign.

"Tall Grace" Great Dane graphite portrait by Sheona Hamilton-Grant

"Tall Grace"

Graphite on paper, 39x22 cm

copyright Sheona Hamilton-Grant

This is my self-portrait -well not literally- I do look a little more human. The rest however, could be me right down to the silver watch band.

I love jeans: wear them daily and know them inside out (literally I wash them reversed) and have them in different shapes and same size. I love them so much I not only keep them for decades but have also been know to spend a little too much "dinero" on them. (I find a great pair close to "irresistible"!)

Jumpers: (as I have recently discover also referred to as pullovers in the US) I would be a very sad artist indeed should they be removed from my wardrobe (referred to as closet). As opposed to my jeans I have them in all sorts of different shapes and sizes (can't beat the baggy-curl-up-beside-the-fire-woolly-jumper).

Back to the portrait: This is Miss Gracie, Erin Vey's big girl. I discovered and (cyberly) met both ladies, through her blog Bark! last year and have been captivated by Erin's photography since. Erin is a canine photographer who's work subtlely merges fine art into canine photography. It's beautiful.

I was drawn to this photograph to the composition I could see, to it's powerful simplicity. I really liked the way the lines swerve and leave a great negative space yet keep the attention on Gracie's presence and elegance.

Please feel free to come over to my blog Black on Grey on White and see more graphite work explained. Sheona
