Irish Setter by Dawn Secord

This painting of an Irish Setter was done from a professional photograph (with the photographer's consent of course). The dog's name is "Magic" Ch. Marlyn All About Magic.

There was something "Magic" about the photograph. The dog is so regal - so proud. The photo was taken outside and the way the light bounced off the flowing mahogany coat took my breath away. When I was asked to paint the dog I had so many ideas!

I worked from a total of three photographs with the primary reference pose being a photo of Magic standing in the show ring with his handler. The other photos were used as additional reference material for me to make some changes to his muzzle and tail in the painting. The party commissioning the painting had no preference on the background. With the highlights on the dog's coat it was natural for me to make the background dark to draw the audience's eye to Magic's face. I used the lighter color reeds to minimize the attention to the highlights on the body coat. My overall goal was to lead the viewer to Magic's face but keep them engaged in the entire painting.

Sweet Kisses - Carol Chretien

I was recently commissioned to paint Jack the dalmatian in this painting as a surprise for the woman in the painting. The photos sent to me were varied and Jack had a lot of different looks depending on the image. One image was the one above that just touched my heart. Jack crossed the Rainbow Bridge in October and this was one of his very last photos.
I got the OK to go forward with this piece and it was a pure joy to do.
The painting has been presented and the results were as expected....tears and appreciation for the keepsake. Jack was the "heart" and beloved of his guardian. She had him all his life, misses him so dearly but the painting also provided a donation to Willing Hearts Dalmatian Rescue to remember Jack ...and this helps the healing process along knowing Jack helped others in need of a forever home.
I thought in this time of year and in the Spirit of the Holiday it would nice to show it here.
Merry Christmas & a Healthy and Creative New Year to all.

Canine Art Guild-Helping Paws 2008 exhibit UPDATE

My painting of the pit bull puppy who was a victim of a home ear crop won the "People's Choice Award" in the Helping Paws 2008 on-line exhibition! Please visit the Canine Art Guild to view the exhibition. The wonderful man who adopted the puppy, "Cupcake", purchased the painting I titled "Innocent". I donated 100% of the money to the shelter who took in the puppy and provided her with veterinary care, love, and found her a loving home. The award money from the People's Choice Award, also went to the rescue organization. Please visit Almost Home NM to read "Cupcake's" story and to see the wonderful dogs and cats which need homes. This was a wonderful exhibition which provided many shelter's across the world needed money and exposure to the never ending cause to help abandoned and abused animals.

Holiday gift ideas for dog lovers

Here is another of my recent paintings. I seem to be in an Australian Shepherd mood lately! Actually, there is a reason. I get a lot of requests for Aussie artwork, so I have done several lately. You can buy t-shirts with my art of Aussies and other breeds on them at http://www.helpingudders.com. A portion of your purchase helps homeless dogs.

Some less expensive gifts are available in my ebay store. I have over 50 dog, cat and horse note card designs and a some t-shirts and leash racks.

And for that really special someone, a gift certificate for a custom pet portrait will bring tears to their eyes. Prices start at $125 for an 8 x 10 up to $300 for a 16 x 20. See my web site for complete details or contact me

The painting here is for sale. It is an 8 x 10 matted and framed to 11 x 14, for $125. Happy holiday shopping!
